When I started at MMC I was SO nervous to meet Zalis because I had heard many similar negative comments like some of the ones written here, but as I progressed through both Choir and Music Production he became my favourite teacher. He does talk a lot and he does throw the entire choir out when only a few people act out but he does have a lesson behind that I believe. He is nice.
-Learn your parts (Choir)
-Do your work, don't just sit around you'll pay for it (Music Pro)
Many people say Zalis is conceded but i honestly think thats because he wants to show that even though his music production class isnt like the other ordinary classes with many tests, its still effective, and he uses his personal stories to show that what he is verbally teaching you can be backed up by his successes.
Zalis was my teacher for music production for 2 years. I found that he had a lot of knowledge, and liked to have fun. I found it difficult when he talked about his life all the time instead of letting me finish my compositions. I also felt that choir concerts were often more about him showing off and less about student achievements. He was a fun person to talk to, but often difficult to work with - would kick the whole choir out for the mistakes of a few students.
His quality of teaching went down in the 3years that I was in his class when I started there we did tons of singing in choir and by the end of my 3rd year we were lucky if we sang for 15min cause he talked so much. Hes extremely conceded and thinks that he is the most important think in his students lives (which is not true) and has NO sympathy when he plans an after school rehearsal to other commitments his students have And did I mention hes rude to anyone he THINKS has less knowledge than him
Wonderful musician and composer. Sub-par teacher.
Zane Zalis does talk about his achievements too much since, that is what all our music production sessions were like. He talked more about his experiences rather than teach us about music. But I did learn a few things from his stories. First, arrogance can be achieved from success. Second, Use your words carefully, think before you speak.
The best music teacher a young kid could have. I've played professionally all over the world. I've passed what I learnt from him on to my kids and they are great players as well. Thanks Zane. Ed Reynolds
Zalis isn't a teacher, he's a mentor. The best mentor I've ever had in my entire life. He gets it.
Mr. Zalis uses his real life experiences to teach students what to expect in the music industry once high school ends. He's a realist, and its very helpful.
Mr. Zalis is knowledgeable teacher, and his class was fun and exciting, but he spends a whole lot of time boasting about himself, or ranting about things that are pretty meaningless.
Are you seriously on ratemyteachers to find out what Zane Zalis is like? there are no words. just go to choir.
Ah, Mr. Zane Zalis. Though at times he could talk way too much about prodigy or his own personal achievements, when it came down to it he was a good teacher. He knew his stuff and if you showed up to class, listened and did the work, you learned something. I learned a lot in his class. I learned how to properly right music as well as the theory behind it. If you didn't do great in that class, well that was your fault. It was an easy class.
He's a really strict teacher, but he's a good knowledge, about music and can teach really well, even though he loves to talk
Mr.Zalis was an awesome teacher when i was at miles mac. he taught me so much and i had such a great time in his music production class as well as choir
Expects nothing but the best from everyone. Took his music. prod. class and one time he told our class that we were his least priority... ouch!
Mr. Zalis' music production class was less about music about more about his achievements and opinions. He's rather arrogant and has an air of (unwarranted) superiority about him. I learned nothing.
He likes to talk alot... not a lot of practicing.....
I had Z in the late '70's when he was just starting. Amazing teacher. Too bad he's lost respect of his students. I see him around the city and even though he knows who I am he acts as though I'm dirt.
I am in his choir class, He is an awesome teacher, and a brilliant musician, as well as he is really funny, but there are some rare moments where you don't really want to be in the same room as him...
I really like him. I'm in his music production class and I love it. I like his stories and I like what he teaches us. I think it's really helpful as and musician. He's a cool guy.
You can say his Music Program class is a slacking class. But you have to listen to him talk. If you didnt finish your work/assinment, most likely you get away with it, without him knowing it.
I hade Zane as my music "teacher" way back in the 80's. He wasn't interested in actually teaching music. If you could already play, great but he had no time to teach you if you were just learning
Tired of it always being the Zane Zalis show! Yikes! When are we ever going to get to hear the actual music???
Zane Zalis is my festival director of the annual Murau Music Summer Festival in Murau, Austria, a great workshopleader for modern singing and composing and a good friend of mine. Vicemayor Ingrid
I was in Zanes' very first class when he joined Miles Mac. "Way back then" he was a very gifted teacher. He always listened to his students and made sure that everyone got attn. Sorry its changed.
Mr. Zalis is too full of himself which affects how he learns about his students. I don't think he knew anything about who I was as a student even though I had him for 10 courses...
Mr.Zalis is a good teacher and has many fun music trips.
Sadly, its all about him. Will use the school, people whatever it takes to TRY and further his own career.
Mr Zalis is a good teacher, He is a REAL teacher, he doesnt follow anyones rules. He'll speak his mind and he is very wise. Yeah he does talk alot but it's wise information hes giving out. 2 thumbs up
I loved Mr. Z when I had him in the late 90's early 2000.
AMAZING teacher. IS a little bit full of himself and prodigy, but he has a right to be. He definatly knows his stuff. A little bit intimidating, but you'll get used to him quickly! good job mr. z!
Z is a good guy. He may be conceited and may think a little too high of himself, but he can help you get into the business if youre serious about it.
He's very talented, but personality-wise, he's gone down the drain. He cares about no one but himself.. He does care about Prodigy, but that's not their fault.
I thought he was a pretty cool teacher and I appreciated the things I learnt in class. As far as I know, he seldom employed favouritsm, and his classes were fun and unique.
He knows his stuff but like everyone else has said, he favours Prodigy (which have never been good). He is very egotistical.
u love him one day and hate him the next. good class. dont do half the stuff he says. if ur serious about music he can help u with secondaryschool & buying equp
Hey he helped get me into the top Audio Engineering school in the country, of course i'm gonna give him points! Thank you from the Perfect Pitch man!!! :D
Want a good mark? Get on his good side & forget about studying or hard work. PS no one cares about Prodigy
He rambles on about nothing, he has very little appreciable musical knowledge, he is usually late for class, nothing is accomplished in class time, etc. etc.
I'm amazed he's still working. He can't play as well as he thinks he can, and his classes never cover any musical theory.
I think he is pretty cool. Even though it was my first class with him today, he seemed pretty cool.
he knows his stuff...however, needs to do less favourtism among students
yes he is talented in what he does but no one wants to hear about it 24/7, he is always late and favours stupid prodigy that cant sing worth anything!
such harsh words, oh dearie me!!! plz letz try to be civil. dont call ppl hitlers!
he can be an ok teacher, but I think that he favors some people a little too much. he also sometimes rambles on too long and wastes time
great guy. will talk about himself and miles music for hours on end! thinks he's superman. he will drown you in his musical knowledge, not a good teach
this guy is awesome i dont know what you other people are talking about! well, maybe i dont notice he only favours prodigy cause i'm not in choir, im in music production. this guy knows what he's talking about!!
Musical genius but what's the deal with Prodigy? They're good but not THAT g
Arrogant, blatantly favours Prodigy, usually late for class, temper. Not good.
Without him I wouldn't have performed or met the influential people I know.
he picks favorites and i hate him for that. I can't stand listening to him.
Favour Prodigy, which isnt fair, give others a chance, you may be surprised
Verry good music teacher can be intense but the outcome of the music is awsome
didn't teach us a thing, always late, never enough time for assignment...
halarious, but he talks about himself way too much, and favors ppl
Mr. Z totally favors Prodigy, anyone can see that...but he's a musical genius.
He's a good teach. But favors, we know who, which isnt fair.
i think hes great, favours prodigy tho, but awesome!
