If you are not a science geek good luck
Michael Porter definitely knows the content that he's teaching, beyond what you would expect, considering he is a chemistry major. He answers questions directly and clearly, providing easy to understand analogies along with diagrams. Not only is he knowledgeable and great at teaching, he also cracks the occasional joke and has a good sense of sarcasm.
Never condescending, answers questions clearly. Tests are fair and he won't snake you with any ridiculous questions. Regular class time is average at best, notes aren't the most organized unless you rewrite your own (don't do that btw it's not worth it), you must do practice questions if you're gonna absorb anything (In IB1 just learn the whole unit or two in a few days, dw). Classroom has no windows so it's so easy to fall asleep.
He knows his stuff for sure and Is good at explaining but he is suuuuuper boring I can't seem to stay awake in his class. His voice just puts me to sleep . I love science but his class makes me dread learning about it .
Amazing teacher. Thank you for existing, Mr. P.
I've had Mr. Porter for all my years at CB (3 years i started in grade 10) and he is the most amazing teacher i've ever had in my entire life! I had him in grade 10 for science, grade 11 for chem/physics, and in grade 12 for chem. His lessons are crystal clear and teaches the subject matter efficiently and extremely well. Once you walk into his class you will be amazed at how laid back he is and how relevant the subject matter is, since he goes on tangents relevant to the course material! M.C.
Mike Porter is one of the brightest and most dedicated teachers I've ever had the privilege of learning from. He was genuinely engaged with his subject (chemistry at the time) and with his students, and I could tell he was taking a genuine interest in each of us. His exams were ballsmashingly difficult at times but if you paid attention to the lessons and asked him for help with assignments, you would be well-positioned to pass. I'm glad to see he's still at it.
Mr. Porter teaches directly from his brain and allows students to relate to science. He will spend large amounts of time talking about astronomy and recent news, but always finishes covering the required material in time for a test. His tests are easy, provided you study. He goes through all efforts to answer questions thoroughly and then some. He is always working to find the best way to explain a concept.
Mr. Porter is a natural educator who rewards hard workers, but still marks fairly.
AMAZING TEACHER!!! I have had him for all 3 years at CB. Such a knowledgeable teacher and very helpful. I absolutely loved the wiki. Also if you need to kill time ASTRONOMY is the key!
This teacher is incredibly knowledgeable. Digresses often, but the content is often applicable and relevant in the future. His teaching still is laid back but you learn a great deal if you have seminars with him. Hope I have him next year.
Knows his stuff and truly cares about his student's learning and success. Rants during lesson but information is always relevant and interesting (astronomy is always fair game though). Bases a lot of his tests on textbook but rarely uses it while teaching so it's a good idea to review the chapter in the textbook before the test even if you haven't been using it in lesson. Always willing to answers questions-never condescending.
One of the nicest people I know. Not an overly great teacher, but go after school and he is willing to explain anything, clearly. In class, he rants a lot about random stuff, especially likes to venture off about astronomy. Tests out of the textbook, teaches out of his brain. Kinda confusing to learn to, if you're naturally apt to science you'll do fine. Amazing person and extremely knowledgeable, literally he might know everything in the science world. Loves his mac computer and the wiki.
not easy, but nobody should expect physics to be easy. knows his subject matter extremely well and knows how to keep it interesting and more importantly, relevant to the students. also is wonderfully
Knows what he's talking about and how to communicate it, he used Looney Tunes to prove what projectile motion doesn't look like :D
Really knows his stuff and gives great explanations. Makes physics and chem interesting.
Really good teacher, you think your just having fun in class until you realized you've learnt everything you need. Nice job Mr. Porter! :)
interesting guy...but something about the way he teaches makes his class the most boring thing ever...i can't pay attention for more than 5 minutes at a time...really knows his stuff though.
porter is an interesting guy...he goes off on a lot of tangents but they're relevant sort of...but yes his marking is weird..
hes a good teacher, a little scattered when he teaches though. and btw, its harder to raise your mark than to lower it. it has nothing to do with how he marks it.
good teacher, but marks things in a weird way. One time, I did horrible on a quiz and my mark went down 3%. And on a test, I aced it and my mark went up 2%.
cb's best chem teacher! he explains the stuff very well, that's all what matters!
the best teacher...All those who have him, will thank god when they are in university
Porter is the man!!! I didn't understand anythign in chem last year with Auclair and now everything makes sense
really..really...tall...likes 2 give 8:30 detentions...
He is the best...he really knows his stuff, so don't try to fool him!
best teacher i ever had...teaches like a university prof...in other words - gets you ready for the real world, i love him!!! i wish i could have him again!
great teacher, just gotta ask the right questions. A tough but fair marker. Not enough explosion demos. We got the safer version than when Gloucester had him
Greatest Person in the world, ok teacher. If you like independent learning he's good. Hard but fair marker.
needs to learn how to teach HIGH SCHOOL students...otherwise really cool person!
Someone needs to tell this guy he's not a university prof anymore!
why is there even a class? Just give us the book and learn ourselves..cant t
