As a musician, he could be the greatest treasure in this era but as a teacher, he is little better than useless. During his classes which are 74 minutes long, the band plays for about 40 minutes and he gives out a high B or a low A to everyone regardless of the student's effort, participation, or knowledge. On the other hand, if you ever need help with your instrument or you just want to discuss music, Mr. Kay is a joy to speak with. However, keep in mind that he is old and cannot remember much.

What an amazing music teacher! I was so fortunate to have mr Kay as a teacher. If you want to continue with music, trust me, listen to the lectures! 98 percent of that comes in handy for me as a musician and a teacher, and I didn't listen as much as I should have! Take an interest in music, reflect the enthusiasm you observe and you will be better off for it.

He's a good guy and a good teacher, but he talks WAY too much. In the end, four-fifths of our time wzs he talking about things that are totally different from music. However, he does care about you as an idividtual and he WILL actually get you to improve for your instrument.

Very good musician, but lacks understanding. Also, we spent numerous classes not playing music at all- actually, not learning anything remotely connected to music at all.

He is passionate about his music and this passion extends beyond himself. He is truly willing to help and share this love and passion for music to kids/people he did not even personally know or met. Just listen to him, carefully listen, you are missing a lot if you don't.

Mr. Kay is an inspirational teacher who changed many lives, but scars others' unintentionally. A great trumpet player and a great conductor, though sometimes he'll take the whole class time talking about something and that was boring. I didn't like him very much and whenever you didn't come to a concert he would outright get pissed at you...I quit Band 9 because of this.

Mr. Kay is so passionate about music it's difficult not to feel that his attitude is infectious. Although his talks are long, they are usually quite animated and intriguing as they draw from a wealth of experience. He encourages his students to understand music ever so much, It's quite miraculous the amount of energy he does everything so spiritedly, almost as if he were powered by music itself.
