Miss shanks is a very nice persona and very smart. She takes time out of her own day to help students with clarification on previous lessons. One thing I noticed that she could improve on is allowing students to do math other way (as long as they’re logical). Miss shanks persistently insists on doing it her way, which for some students may be very difficult to understand.
really hard teacher
Ms Shanks knows her math! When I needed help she helped me. (not in class time)
Shanks is someone you're going to detest while you're in her class, but later in life you're going to be grateful for how she would rip your answers apart. She will mark grammar, style, punctuation, even how straight your equation is! none of it is necessary in high school, but these skills will become important very soon if you're on the road to university. She is rude in class and picks favorites, the only time she'll actually help you is if you go see her for extra help.
She's a horrible person , she gets mad for no reason, she is signs work without explaining it and she's bad at explaining. overall 0 out of 5 stars horrible teacher
Alright here's the thing. She is a very kind person, but will rarely explicitly teach/tell you what to do. If you can go to extra help, G.O. She's sometimes self-contradicting, and extremely confusing. If you put effort into the class, then you'll get a decent mark. She never checks homework too.
Personally I loved her. She really helped me and was always very kind. most people don't like her but I do.
She marks extremely hard and you have to make sure to get everything exactly the way she wants it. If your naturally bad at math (like me) this class is literally the shitiest. But if you're good at math, you will get an okay mark but it won't be as good as with another teacher. If you have her in grade 11 or grade 12. GOOD LUCK.
Honestly just run
She's a really nice person and is passionate and knowledgeable about math. The only problem is that she doesn't do proper lessons and she favors certain students (gifted kids). I had her in gr 12 advanced functions and it was terrible. She crushed my self esteem even when i went to her for extra help. Good notes and proper instruction would have been helpful.
With Ms. Shanks there are certain things you need to pay attention too. My experience with her is that if you don't understand you have to go to math help. She is a very poor marker and teacher but she does know the math. It is a mainly self-taught class and she uses a teaching style called jigsaw. This is where she splits the unit up and students have to teach themselves and then teach other students. this teaching style did not work for m friends or me. If you are in her class GOOD LUCK!
In my small amount of time with her, I already don't like her. She is a nice person and all, but she seems like she became a teacher to show off how good she is at math... and that isn't good when you have ninth graders' futures in your hands. She barely explains anything, and basically forces you to come to extra help. When I've asked her for help, she acted as though I was stupid for not understanding and barely explained. I'm dreading getting her in later grades, where she could ruin my life.
Okay, Im going to be honest here. If you are good at math you will do fine BUT I can almost guarantee you will get a higher mark in another teacher's math class than hers because of the way she marks. She is an awful teacher but if it does not involve math and her teaching methods she is a good person under all of that. If the only you can do well in her class is by going for extra help that's a joke, the only people that recommend her are her teacher's pets who are naturally good at math.
Not helpful at all, only gives you marks if you use her complicated methods.
Mrs Shanks does not teach the lessons, you have to teach yourself. She is not a good teacher. She WASTES so much time on the early part of each unit, then she realizes she only has 2 days left before the unit test and she rushes through the hardest part of the unit in 2 days. She doesn't give you ample time to complete homework, or test reviews. Her pattern is very predictable. She gives out the hard problem solving questions over the weekend ( when you can't get any help) and then tests you
Really nice and cares about her students but awful in front of the class. The one piece of advice I can offer is if you are struggling in her class, go in for extra help. It is annoying to spend your free time trying to learn when she should have taught on your school time, but you have to take initiative if you are going to bash her. She is much better at teaching one-on-one. Go in for extra help, do your homework, ask questions. You will pass.
She really doesn't teach anything
Doesn't understand a single thing about teaching in any way, shape, or form. The only way to pass Grade 9 math is to not go gifted. She makes the students explain units to other students instead of herself like a proper teacher. Made me redo my homework and still marked it wrong after not telling me what to do. Please, if you want to pass math, or even high school, do not, I repeat DO NOT take her class. By the way, only thing I remember isTo the exponent of,To the exponent of,To the exponent of
I know a lot of people seem to hate her but the thing is if you put in the effort, you will get far in her class. I had an 80's mark in elementary school math, but after graduating grade 9, my mark was well in the 90's. The people complaining here are usually people who don't come to her extra help, or don't ask questions. If you need clarity, ASK HER. She's not into the habit of explaining things unless you tell her you need clarity. if you need help, stay after school a few times, it helps.
Reading all the ratings about Ms. Shanks makes me sad. I was her student from 2004 - 2006. So you can imagine that I am a professional now and a very successful one for that matter. I believe Ms. Shanks played a major role in that. Was Ms. Shanks hard with exams and in general? YES - but she is also fair. But did it make my life much easier in university? Absolutely YES. I did amazing in my first year math and computer science courses. She is hard but believe me it will pay off in the future.
Sure she is a dedicated teacher but I feel like she is waaaaay too hard on her students. she is a pseudo good teacher but most of the times she just makes you copy down notes and you have to pray that you understand it. im not being mean or anything but she is a not very good teacher. I would switch out if I knew better
Mrs. Shanks is a very dedicated and hardworking teacher. She's helped me to learn advanced mathematics that the school curriculum doesn't teach, and her tests and quizzes are always a refreshing challenge.
I love her. Sure she's tough, but my child said looking at her butt hanging on my seat with no way out got me through the days. She was such a turnt up teacher. She turnt up all day n' night. I hope she's still being turnt up after her many many many years. Keep it 100 Ms. Shanks, even though no one will ever be able to keep a 100 in yours.
She is a very nice person, and is always available. For those who are interested in math and would like to go further with math, business or engineering she is a great teacher! Yes, she is a little picky, but she will always make sure that she prepares the class with her almost daily homework quizzes. You might hate her now, but in university you will be glad that you had her picking out all of your details. I always ended off with mid 90s in her class!
Without a doubt she is the worst teacher I've ever had. She was unclear during lessons and rambled on about useless off topic things. Don't bother breathing in that class because the second you ask her or anyone else a question you're pointed out. Mrs Shanks will make you look
She was an alright teacher who did her best to help me and my friends, though, there were times when she was not clear. She was nice to me and I learnt a lot.
I love her as a teacher. I hope I could be in your class next year
I finally get the chance to review Mrs. Shanks. She is actually a pretty nice and dedicated teacher. I don't have too much trouble understanding her but she marks incredibly hard. Extra help is probably a good idea if you want to learn about her pet peeves.
Shes a very nice person once you get to know her, but she CANNOT teach AT ALL!!! --if you get in her class, I'd suggest a personal tutor.---thats how I got to pass her class with over 75%.
she's being super nice this year (to me anyways) and she is always staying for extra help. although other people may not like her i think she is one of the nicest, but stricter teachers i have met
A nice person, if you can get past the initial impressions. find someone else to help you though...
Does not try to help students! Just sits at her desk. Gives a lot of work. Expects you to understand all the work that is given. An rather sits down doing nothing rather than helping the students pass the class.
Your screwed if you have her! Do what ever you can to leave her class... SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!!
She is really picky and I guess want you to do things her own way. If you get on her good side, she will help you for sure.I'm a PHS graduate and looking back she was easy than brutal university profs
Marks in grade 8 were 99, grade 9 with shanks = 72 finale, grade ten with Mrs. Wraith= 94 , enough said.
Although Mrs Shanks is strick, she does make herself available when help is needed. Other teachers don't
she doesnt know how to teach properly. Has to be mroe clearer. If you have her switch out. Unless you want to do poorly in math.
not that bad. it really depends on how easily you understand math. she teaches as if you already know what shes talking about. The only complaint i really have is that she marks so hard! its bad.
Its had for me to give this teacher a good rating when she obviously tries so hard to be kind and funny and helpful. I'm not a hard worker, but even the students who work hard are doing poorly
I was doing great in grade 8 but my marks are now down to the 40/50 range now my parents are mad. Shanks will shank you don't get her class.
ok maytbe i dont really like her and she marks kinda hard but she actually does try to help the students alot, and
Honestly, I have her for Comp SCI and for Advanced Functions. She doesn't teach at all in Computer Science, she just gives out sheets. In Math, it all depends on how naturally good you are at it.
Nice... but clueless. Takes off marks for stupid stuff, but just do it the way she tells you (even if it makes no sense) and you'll do okay
She's genuinely nice and tries to make class interesting. Unfortunately she just can't teach very well.... Very willing to try and answer your questions, but always manages to answer a different question instead, so you just smile at her and go back to struggling by yourself.
"Mrs. Shanks, how do I do this question?" "I can't answer you right now." "Well why not?" "I don't have time." Then she takes 3 minutes to tell about her lack of 30 seconds.grrr
wow i taught myself grade 11 university math! mrs. shanks is oblivious to everything that goes on and i think she talks really fast when she doesnt know what she's talking about.
Go away! You can't teach. Worst class ever. Can't relate to students. If she doesn't like you look out! Unfair and rude.
Vile, horrible teacher! Treats everyone like they don't have a brain. More interested in being right than fair.
she can be helpful at times ... when she isnt undermining your intelligence .. or being mean and rude.. =D
Mrs.... if something is said that may not make sense to you by another student... don't roll your eyes or scrunch your face. Some people don't get math!
I don't think Shanks is THAT bad, she's a nice person, but her methods are very tedious. She can contradict herself sometimes, but I'm sure she would say: Clients will be changing their mind all the time!
