Very hard on marking and tough to get a great mark.
Marks VERY hard, especially if he does not like you. He also has favoritism. It is very difficult to get an 80 or above in his class. If you do not care to get a high mark in English, then his class would be fine, otherwise you are better off switching to a different class if you do not want your average to drop down fast.
He isn't that good of a teacher...and he is very boring. Mr. Beaton is one of those teachers that talk too much. Unfortunately, I had him as my english teacher this semester.
He is very strict, not the easiest to maintain above a B in his class
*This teacher always pushes you to work harder. If you happen to have Mr. Ian Beaton for Grade 12 Academic English, you might fail greatly in his class. Additionally, he does have favourites.*
Mr. Beaton is extremely experienced in teaching english, and is generally a nice man. He is very knowledgeable but a hard marker. The inquiry question project is really vague and he does not help or guide you very well through any of it. Some of the question options are unanswerable and he knows that, so chose wisely!!! (Make sure to choose a question that is researchable...) Other projects throughout the year are fairly straight forward. Overall, a decent experience with this teacher.
More demanding than other teachers, but provides lots of feedback. Work hard with a positive attitude and it will pay off.
Mr. Beaton is a hard marker, but he's fair. If you work hard in his class, you'll eventually be rewarded. He likes to answer questions with long speeches that don't necessarily answer the question.
Mr. Beaton is a great teacher. He's always in a good mood and I enjoy going to his class everyday. He always makes great suggestions about how I can improve my writing. Even though he does mark a little harder than the rest of the English teachers, if you work really hard and listen to his advice, you'll do just fine.
He is a great teacher. Although he is a hard marker, every correction has its logically reasoning. He's really nice and tries his best to make everything clear but sometimes its hard to understand what he really wants. I hope i have him again.
If you think you deserve higher marks, and you are "playing Tetris in class" or are "confused by what he is saying", that is your fault for not putting in the effort and keeping up with a grade 12 ACADEMIC English class. If you expect to write essays the night before with no prep and get a good mark on them, that is just not going to happen. That's just not how life works. Mr. Beaton is a smart man and will give you exactly the mark you deserve. No more, no less.
Most people think that he marks too hard, but I think that it's actually quite fair. He has a passion for what he does and tries his best to help you if you ask for it.
had him as a grade nine english teacher and never gave a level 4 unless it was a presentation. Overall pretty boring teacher and I was playing Tetris the entire first semester during his class to stay awake. Praying not to get him in grade 12
I went in to Grade 12 English extremely scared for my marks, and then I met Mr. Beaton! Such as sweet guy who is so incredibly passionate about English! Definitely has high expectations for assignment but always willing to help and give feedback. If you really work hard, he will certainly reward you. Enjoy him if you have the privilege of his class.
he's fairly reasonable but he always give out such low marks and never write comments
He didn't do anything wrong, just that half of his class is failing for no reason. He make you wonder if universities have English as a requirement just so it'll be harder to get in.
He isn't the worst teacher ever. Happy to help whenever you ask for it. He might talk to long then you just try to avoid more then 3 seconds of eye contact and keep saying something along the lines of "okay, thanks," "yup, got it," or "yea mhm kbye."
He's pretty reasonable. Most people only get bad marks because they are only now realizing that the quality of work they handed in back in elementary school won't do anything for them when they take grade 12 English. Not many universities really care about grade 9 marks, and I feel like he's taking advantage of this in a good way. I'm pretty sure he's receiving way too much hate for something I believe most of us will thank him for later.
very nice man and give fair mark to people. he actually marks the assignments, and give you the marks you deserved. i like him
He's the hardest english teacher in uhs because hes head of the department and uhs english is already really hard, you should drop his class if you're in gr 11/12 and take summer/private school for b
Mr.Beaton is honestly one of the nicest teachers i know, HOWEVER with that being said hes also one of the hardest. If you ask for help and pay attention in class hes great... participation in Beatons
Beaton is not mean but his lessons can be boring :) AND he marks kinda hard :) But as long as he's not mean i guess he's okay .... better than J. Silver i suppose
I quite enjoyed him as a teacher. I'm still awaiting my exam results, so this may be a tad premature but I don't think he deserves a lot of the hate he receives. He's always helped me when I asked.
This teacher does not listen to the voice of reason. He gives horrible marks that destroy any thought of you being good in English and he isn't nice at all.
Hard marking, and seems to be impossible to impress...
Very hard marking, and seemingly impossible to impress
Lots of interesting discussions, which is the most you can hope for in a class filled with uninterested students. Most of the people who hate him don't take their schoolwork seriously enough or are ju
never made clear what was expected, even when asked specificaly.
He's alright.. hard marker... but at least he is a good teacher..... would be fine for grade 9...but wouldn't want him again for my future marks...:S
Advice: Work hard. Work hard, and work hard. I don't know about you freaks but I got 82 for english in grade 9. I had few 2s and 2 or three A-s, but I was satisfied with the mark. I do like english :)
Though half the people in my english class dropped, he's actually not that bad. If you do your work, show up to class and participate in his discussion you'll at least get a satisfactory mark.
He gives bad marks then give NO explanation for the mark. And whenever you go to confront him about the mark he says "We'll talk about it later." Um no. He never talks about it with you.
He seems reasonably insightful and knowledgable... but he is such a introvert it's hard to get to that part of him! He knows his stuff but nobody else does... and that's not much for the students ><
he's very witty when it comes to literature, but how do i know what i'm being too 'VAGUE' with?! he's too close-minded about others' opinions, and only asks ur opinion so he can argue otherwise.
Boring, hard marker, makes you jump through hoops. On the other hand, there was minimal number of assignments, essays were never more than 500 words.
Unreasonably hard, gives low marks for 'vague' reasons and doesn't provide much guideline to follow on. Avoid at all cost, you'll end up very frustrated and having to retake English at no fault of your own. Thinks he should consider earlier retirement.
not a good teacher! such a hard marker and doesnt even understand my essay's enough to give the mark they deserve...god save me i dont get him next year
I had him last year in grade 9. he's hard!! its ok to be hard but PLEASE have a reasonable explanation for being hard other than VAGUE -_- he is NOT the typical english teacher!
jeez hes not that bad...uu guyz are pretty hard on him...hes a typical english teacher...what can i say
OKish teacher. he won't go hard on you. BUT YOU CAN ASK HIM ONE QUESTION, AND HE'LL GIVE U LIKE A SPEECH. SO ANNOYING O_o"
Mr. Beaton is definitely a har-marker who only gave me an 82 ! (I am a perfectionist). He talks way too much and gives no homework. The work he does mark, he is very hard to pleasE
can u say HARD.....he sure can...grrrr i hate him i hate him
His marking is very difficult, doesn't answer you, instead he veers off of the subject of the question and leaves you with none of the knowledge that you would've of liked to receive.
