He’s the hardest teacher you will ever meet, but he’s the best teacher. No way you’re gonna find someone who will teach you more than he does
He is a better teacher than Mrs. I don't show up to class for 5 months (aka Miss Robinson).
He is a very good teacher, assigns a lot of homework, but pushes you to do your absolute best and gets you prepared for university.
Not as strict as some students have said but certainly a difficult teacher to learn from. The same barely on topic anecdotes almost every week on top of dad jokes and plain old narcissism. The lowest point was having to read his poetry in class... He seems to care more about hearing the sound of his own voice and making students pine for his approval than actually preparing anyone for university. Getting a 90 was easy when I realized you just have to tell him what he wants to hear.
I had him in my Grade 9 year, and I thank him for his strictness. Even though the class was very rigorous and I had to work every single day to earn my 90%, it was worth it and I know that I earned it completely. He's knowledgeable, funny, and an amazing teacher. Yes, it was hard during the year, but I learned so much with him and I appreciate his efforts for each class. His enthusiasm for English is endless and he will be hard on you, but it's worth it in the end.
Despite the heavy workload, I learned a ton in his class and like everyone says, he definitely pushes you to do your very best.
I had a very tough year with him, but he pushes you to your limits in English. I learned a lot with him. Although the homework load was extremely unbearable, I survived. Do your homework everyday and pay attention in class.
He assigns more homework for his grade 9 and 10 classes than a grade 12 IB physics class. Overall though he may be unreasonable at times but he is a great teacher that pushes you to the breaking point at times. It is all his strategy of teaching, to push you to do your absolute best in English.
He is an easy marker. He gives out around an hour and half of homework every night(which he assumes to only take up fourty-five minutes). Despite the homework, one's proficiency in English increases exponentially after a rigorous semester with him. He is knowledgeable, but his true strength is the sheer amount responsibility he takes. I doubt that one can find another teacher like this in any other school in Ontario.
By the way, he only castigates irresponsible students.
he's very knowledgeable, but he just gives way too much homework. raising your hand means nothing to him so like if even if ur hand is down he's gonna pick on u. there is kinda no right to pass. the homework is useless and it eats up ur time. also if u try to ask him for help he just says "ask someone, i dont have time to answer everyone's question" when he doesnt even answer anything at all. he has favourites so honestly switch out if u can ;-; im dyin
He gives too much hw and the experience is very stressful
best teacher ever hes so cool and groovy. rock and roll
Mr.Guthrie is hands down one of my favorite teachers. He makes English class so enjoyable and adds humor to his lessons. He's a hard teacher but it's worth it because you learn so much in his class.
Extremely hard on his students but his teaching ways at amazing. You will learn so much from him. RIP if you're not a favourite
Mr. Guthrie is one of few teachers who have mastered the arts of teaching. No matter how hard and strict he can be, he is a really good teacher and he will push you to your absolute limits in literature. He has lots of knowledge so manipulating or outsmarting him is very difficult. If you are in his class, I'm not going to lie to you, he's a hard teacher, but you will learn every good habit you need from him. He does have favourites which can be a little annoying just join debate if your worried
Good teacher. Hard marker. Has favourites. Rip your mark if you're not a god in literature.
Absolute legend. Literally all that I know about English is thanks to him.
Amazing, smart teacher but unfortunately like everyone has stated picks obvious favourites and if you're not one of them you can feel left out and inadequate. Its unfortunate how he only sees a select few as successful.
He taught me the difference between who and whom
He is a good english teacher, however if ur not one his favorites, he could be rather mean sometimes and MAKE SURE to get ur homework done. Make sure to know ur literary devices well as it helps ALOT in his class. Sometimes he just carry off topic and talks about his life, his wife, his cat, etc. etc. You will also have alot of presentation alot in his class.
he's a nice teacher but talks too much about debate and his cat. he has obvious favorites and is really mean to everyone else
he is a good teacher, although bias at times. learned a lot from him.
Was a mid-1990's student (Gr9 & OAC): He has favourites. That's strike one. If you aren't a fave (Debaters are his golden crew) then forget him "teaching you". Instead what he does is "talk down to you". He thinks that only HE knows what makes a person well read, or what makes a book (fiction or non) worthy of the read. That's strike two. Lastly, if you had him in Gr9 and weren't the best student then, he will treat you as if nothing has changed in OAC, because "grudges" I guess? Strike three.
My son has Mr Guthrie and I think he is broken. He came home today and said is he is from now on only to be referred to as the great marian. I said what? He said yea you lumps better have your homework on the kitchen table by the time im done with all my homework (He means food) Whenever I am about to talk he says YES PLEASE MOM. and whenever he doesn't like the food he says mom you're a good girl but this needs to be better. He just said last night "God Girls and Guthrie are most important.Help
He was terrible. I was in debate but I also did deca and he literally yelled at me in front of everyone when he found out about deca, even though I never missed debate practice once. To make things worse his useless homework ate up all my time.
Debate is love, debate is life. Memorize it as your life motto, not only for Guthrie's class, but for the betterment of your very existence.
Having him as my English teacher was literally the best academic thing that has ever happened to me
I will forever be indebted to this man - and I say that with with complete seriousness.
Thank you Mr. Guthrie.
You will learn so much from this man in just five minutes. He is really an amazing teacher who will teach you almost everything you need to know about English. His passion for English is incredible
Just make sure you do your homework on time or be prepared to get yelled at. His laugh is hilarious too. Just be cool with him and he'll be cool with you
Mr. G is so fly.
But like, in a cool way.
No seriously, probably one of my favourite teachers at WOSS. He's so passionate about English, that you can't help but also be passionate. He really strengthens your writing, and ALWAYS gives 'constructive criticism'.
Really, really, really funny. Sometimes he'll explain a joke and he'll find it so funny that he won't stop laughing and OH MY GOD his laugh is so funny.
You learn more in one class with him than an entire semester with another teacher.
This is my fourth effin year with him, and though i hate him most of the time i have to say he is by far my favourite teacher and a real mentor. His knowledge is deep, and you can actually learn alot by listening to his irrelevant rants. Although there are some down sides, like unreasonably impossible expectations, in the long run he is probably the best teacher and mentor ive ever had.
i had Mr. Guthrie in my grade 9 year and he is not that bad if you do your work and actually try you will get amazing marks, if you are not a big fan of actually doing work you may not do so well but you will most defiantly learn and i heard that he is harder on his grade nines because he is trying to show them that high school is not a joke so if you do have him be prepared not to get a 90 but be prepared to be given so much knowledge that it will help you with everything later on. :)
Mr. Guthrie is a once in a life time kind of teacher. He is extremely strict but only because he expects a lot out of his students and clearly believes in all of them. I have only been in his class for around two and a half months but I have learned more than any of my other teachers have taught me combined. SHOW UP TO CLASS. DO THE HOMEWORK. PAY ATTENTION. PUT IN YOUR BEST EFFORT. BE POLITE AND RESPECTFUL. That's all he asks, if you follow through with these, you'll have an incredible semester!
He is very strict and hard. He gives lots of homework and most students do not want to be in his class, unless you are in IB and need help in writing a better IB essay for grade 12.
Guthrie's creative writing course is worth the challenge. If you're like me and you're used to A's, you may be slightly disappointed at first - but trust me, you will learn so much through the semester and it will stick with you! I graduated from WOSS in 2010 and I can honestly say that throughout my university career, Guthrie's teachings have helped with basically every essay I've ever written. And trust me, when you finally do get that A from Guthrie, you'll know you earned it.
Mr. Guthrie was one of my most memorable teachers. He was a character to say the least.
He judged me based on the quality of my writing and not my character.
I was frequently absent and he was quick try and help. He saw potential where I didn't and made an effort to engage with me.
Most people don't take courses with him unless they want to do the work. And he makes sure it gets done.
For debate, he is really hardcore about keeping tabs on current affairs. However he is really passionate, knows his stuff, and will help you improve over the course of the year quite a bit.
This goes back to 1982/1983... I attended WOSS for one year and to this day thank and remember this teacher for his strictness.
I had Mr. Guthrie in my OAC year at White Oaks during the later 1990's, and to be frank, his indifference and terrible teaching was the final push to drop out of high school. He taught with out compassion.
You will learn so much just by being in the same room as him.
Strict teacher but very helpful and funny. Quite biased to so get on his good side.
Has a lot of favoritism and speaks too much about debate. I had him in grade 9 and 10 and I did learn something but I had to change my writing and speaking style because it needed to be in the style he preferred.
Greatest teacher you can ever have. He's one of the few teachers I've seen that takes a genuine interest in how his students are doing and in their success. He is amazing.
Mr Guthrie is a good teacher so far. What he teaches us is amazing and I am sure it will be very helpful next year. Sometimes though, he is over opinionated and tries too much to persuade a student to change than help them be successful without changing. He also wastes a lot of time talking about debate. Sometimes he is rather slow with marking too and his marks seem to have a bias as students overall marks vary a lot when their crswrk show no differences (I wud hv and 87 bt hv 82) Reads alot!!!
What a teacher! Mr. Guthrie has really mastered the craft of teaching a class. He is very knowledgeable (name a book and he'll tell you all about it) and gives great speeches in class, although he does have a tendency to get off-topic quickly. He treats all students equally and in my opinion is the only teacher at White Oaks who truly marks fairly. I learned so much in her Writer's Craft class and am looking forward to continuing with him in Lit Studies this semester. Thank you Mr. Guthrie!
Very smart and knowledgable teacher but way too strict and he is not very understanding. He doesn't always listen to students and he expects way too much from us students.
Very old school but overall an amazing teacher! Hes a deep thinker and knows what he is talking about. Very friendly yet forgetful at times.
Mr. Guthrie is the best English teacher to have in high school! He can be tough but he is very much worth the knowledge and passion he impresses upon you.
He's a good teacher and his teaching helps you in university. I was very pleased that I stayed consistent throughout his English class. If you're serious about English, Mr. Guthrie knows his stuff.
Mr. Guthrie is nice, but i swear he has ADD..he switches from one topic to the next, never finishing his sentance...he's nice but wil fail you if you're not him
Great Teacher! So structured and really will help you become a great at English
In general, Mr Guthrie may seem like a 'hard' teacher however if you do the work assigned and listen to what he is speaking about, you will understand him. He's enthusiastic about teaching,
He gave me a failing grade on my ISU because I didn't laugh at his jokes. I handed it in again when I retook the class and recieved a 95% with no changes (to a different teacher)
Although he makes you really work for your grade, you'll leave his class with a much greater understanding of everything he teaches. I've never seen a teacher with as much passion.
Hands down the best teacher (and debate coach) that I've ever had. He's hard on you sometimes but its worth it when you get to Uni and everyone else is learning how to write an essay-you already know
During his classes - I hated him. He scared me and I hated attending his classes. But I do realize that my english has improved in his classes. He uses fear to teach. >=(
One of those teachers you'll never forget, even with the horrendous scottish accent he sometimes pulls.
Despite having to finish my homework at lunch hours in the bookroom, like a hobbit, I can only appreciate the knowledge gained from his class, now that I'm in university sweating over my essays!!!
I've had him for grade 9 and 10 so far and I find that he's a very strict and enthusiastic teacher. Even though he's strict, his love for English and random stories makes him very interesting to have.
Oh, Mr. Guthrie. How i miss the Naval Police LOL. Sure he's a stickler for the rules, but that's what made him so great. He's conservative and almost neurotic and extremely intelligent. I can hardly believe he teaches at a high school, nevermind WOSS. He's a hard marker and he'll definitely push you to be your best. At the time it's frustrating, but you'll be thankful later that you can write well. I learned more in his class in the first month than in entire semesters elsewhere. He'd make a great Prof.
he is the smartest teacher at white oaks. by far. he makes the period go by so fast. when he goes off on his random stories about playing soccer....laugh when he laughs and you will be ok. but seriously, he loves english, and reading so much. he wants his students to love it as much as he does. all in all....good teacher :)
hes the best, hoesntly, smart teacher at WOSS by far, and is awesome at teaching. i love his stories
Mr. Guthrie is extremely inteligent and i respect him very much. woooohoooo
MR. Guthrie is wicked!!!! He's probably the smartest teacher at WOSS. And has random but funny stories.
Just a note, this only applies to Writer's Craft (I will not generalize since I have not had him in other classes.) Mr. Guthrie might be a bit forgetful and sometimes overly enthusiastic =) but you can clearly see the dedication and love he has for English. If you love the subject; want a fair mark or want the whole period to pass quickly, Mr. Guthrie is your best bet. Plus, he is personally very friendly as long as you work hard, be punctual, and respect his rules. As he says, be reasonable!
The best teacher I ever had. Helped me improve a lot of my writing.
HAMISH GUTHRIE- YOU ROCK MY SOCKS! YOU ARE BY FAR THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE AND YOU ARE REALLY FUNNY TOO! YOU LOVE YOUR JOB AND IT SHOWS. YOU RESPECT YOUR STUDENTS SO THEY RESPECT YOU. I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU! THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!!!
When it comes to English this guy knows everything, but he has trouble remebering stuff.
A great teacher. Friendly and helpful. Good prep for university level english.
As a first year English major , I cannot even sum up how much this guy has helped me be successful in university. Stay in his class, it'll help you at uni!
Mr. Guthrie was the best teacher I ever had. He is passionate about teaching and about students. He made me what I am today; a teacher.
Probably the best teacher I will ever have. Thanks Mr. Guthrie!
Hamish Guthrie was a high-quality English teacher. Best quality? I swear he knows about EVERY book ever written, even ones that have just been published.
Great teacher, but I think he would get better work out of us if he didn't pile on so much, please give us a chance to breathe!
Good teacher, but he is too 1984ish, and drives students like slaves (says "hands out of pockets!" at every O Canada)
Mr. G is honestly THE best english teacher. He can be a hard worker and expects a lot, but he is soo funny and really takes the time for his students
Mr. Guthrie is soooo cool! People who always try changing out of his class cause he's "hard" are stupid. You'll learn so much!! Trust me.
hes cool and FUNNY but he never stops talking EVER!! (his "brief" speeches) but he's still a really good teacher...but work hard
angry at something. wound up and impatient. he pushes people, but sometimes in the wrong places and seems to forget about those who need extra help.
Easily the only reason why I read books. He's the best teacher to date I've ever had.
Mr Guthrie is the best teacher I have ever had! The time spent on grammar was dull back in grade ten, but set me up so much better for the rest of school.
You make me want to read every single minute of every single day.
you are at war with the entire world. you are winning. i doubt you use the internet. you have been a teacher your entire life. i heard you dislike jamaicans.
Mr. Guthrie is arguably the most well-read teacher ever.
