One of if not the worst teachers currently at scona. Does not care about his students success and takes his failure at being a professor out on his high school classes. Avoid.
Great teacher for AP you will definitely know your stuff when it comes to the AP exam. He prepares you very well and let’s you rewrite all your exams. Overall a great year.
Henkelman is a cool teacher and knows his stuff very well. He marks exams very fast and you usually get your marks the next class. He also has a unique and effective teaching style. However, his exams are very hard and often focuses on insignificant details that no one studies for.
He created a very negative environment, whenever someone asked a question, he made that person feel pretty stupid in his response. His sense of humour also sucks
i feel like he thinks that he knows a lot maybe he does but he doesnt explain anything and his notes are bad. I had to learn everything by myself either online or from the textbook
Mr. Henkelman is a very knowlegeable teacher, and definitely loves biology. If you love biology, and want to learn things above and beyond the curriculum, Henkelman is your man, but if you are just taking the class for credit, you will find his class very difficult. He teaches at a very fast pace and his tests are extremely difficult, but he puts all the notes online and gives lots of rewrites to make up for it. As long as you work hard and stay on his good side, you will learn a lot.
He's an okay guy that's pretty knowledgeable IN biology, I just feel he can't communicate his love of bio to the students properly and that's why the class struggles trying to keep up with his different teaching method. If you're in bio 20, take Larson. If you're in 30 and care about the AP exam, then take Henkelman, otherwise just go with Larson if you wan't a great mark.
Mr. Henkelman's classes are quite a shock after you come out of a science 10 class. He does teacher like a university professor which isn't a bad thing, just a different style of teaching. He is extremely knowledgable about biology and shows to have a great passion for it which is admirable. However, his tests blow you right out of the park. Even if you study hard for one of his tests and you think you no what you are doing, good luck getting an A. It takes a LOT of effort to even maintain an A.
Trying to juggle this guy's class with alot of extracurricular activities is impossible, especially if you are not a very good memorizer. Good luck, you need it.
The worse bio teacher I've ever had, his tests are way too hard, and the whole class consists of him lecturing as if he's a uni professor. Not to mention he's very rude in general. Even though he has a lot of knowledge, he manages to make everything so confusing. Good luck if you have him, you'll need it.
He was a pretty good teacher, would have all the notes online I would strongly reccomend to print them out so you could follow along in class, makes it a lot easier, however he would make several offensive comments.
He is very knowledgable and has a great personality. However, his classes are composed of just lecturing and taking notes, which can be boring. It is difficult reviewing using the textbook because he doesn't always make it very clear what is important and what isn't. His class is definitely for higher intellectuals, and covers material at a fast pace, which he admits himself. His classes are very uni like, so if you want a challenge or want to prepare for university, this is the class for you.
If you get on his bad side, he will try to deduct your mark. Don't try to make a joke, he will be salty to you. Lol, I make it once and I am done now. If he really doesn't like you he will deduct your mark that seems unnoticeable but actually impact your grades (ex 83.8 to 83%). He barely teaches anything, and when the Principle comes, he looks like he is doing something. I often felt like I was targeted... Lol run if you have him. Im out
Personally, I've never experienced a worse bio teacher in my life. I find bio to be fairly easy subject but this man tends to complicate even the simplest of concepts. His test questions are Chincey and never gives any thorough explanations as to why the answer is correct. I've never gotten below a 96.8% average in a class... I'm currently sitting at a 95.4. That speaks for itself. Terrible!
Actually a beast lol. Teaches you everything you need to know, has tons of experience, and tells lots of good stories.
Tried to drop out after the first week of classes for Bio 20AP. He lectures on the topic in very high academic and confusing terms, then laughed at my classmate for asking for clarification. His tests are hell, they do not even come close to the topic he was lecturing on. He is very smart and I'm sure he knows the topic very well, but he cannot teach it at a 20 level bio course.
Mr. Henkelman was by far my favourite teacher at Scona - although it was difficult to adjust to the fast pace at first, once you got used to it, the class was amazing. Every day he went above and beyond in teaching, enriching everything and making lectures engaging. He had tests that seemed very difficult, but were a breeze by the end of the year, which greatly aided in preparing for the AP test, which is a vigorous exam that most other teachers don't do nearly as well preparing for. 10/10
While I was intimidated at the beginning of the year, my initial opinions changed rapidly, as Henkelman's passion for biology made him a pleasure to learn from. The class was not easy, and required a lot of work, but Henkelman was helpful, and enriched the course with his obvious knowledge and often tied what we were learning about to real applicable things, which made his class one of my all time favorites
Very good teacher. Really funny dude, and super awesome classes. I won't lie, his tests are harder than most, and it will catch you off guard most likely, but its well worth the tradeoff for his teaching. The style is hands off, and he treats his students very well. I would highly recommend him, as long as you can take notes and have fun!
His tests are hell. After our last exam half the class tried to drop Bio 30 AP. A good guy, but really too intense for highschool. He doesn't give notes, and his goatee is extremely distracting.
I've now had him for Bio 20AP and Bio 30AP. To be honest, I really did not like him at the first year, but now I can say that he's one of the best teachers for AP/ Diploma prep ever. He makes you think about Biology as a whole and you can tell how passionate he is of Biology. He made us read the textbook for 20AP but not 30AP. He can also be pretty funny at times and he's good at helping you with any info you don't understand. He is also literally an open book.
I hated him at the beginning of the year but now he is my favourite teacher. His jokes make the class fun and he's so knowledgable. He makes thought provoking questions and keeps you engaged in his class. Hard tests but you get to retest.
He is extremely knowledgeable and will always answer questions that prove to have the capacity of sparking further interest, but he also encourages a lot of external research and completing homework and textbook readings, as well as paying close attention in class and asking good questions, are requirements to do well in his class.
Makes his worksheets super easy and explains 1/5th of the content in class. He teaches only the easy stuff and you get torn a new one upon the day of the exam. Do not recommend. You do get to rewrite all your unit exams but is it really worth studying 5-8 hours for an 82% on his AP style unit exams? Not at all. He expects you to spend all your free time reading the textbook. Have a question? His response will always be "it's in your textbook". First time seeing someone cry after an exam.
Very, very smart teacher but a way to intense for high school. Its high school not university. We should be getting prepared for university not being tested on the hardest material and hoping we figure out how to take university style exams on our own. Very low ammount of material in class so it seems easy but then on the tests it becomes a different language.
Very difficult tests that do not cover any material in class
Way too overqualified to be a high school teacher. His level of intellect exceeds far too greatly that of which should be present at a high school level. Teachers like a university professor and is very petulant if you do not understand material. Getting help from him is very difficult and you must learn everything independently. His exams are not exams, they are essays and therefore he loses many students in what he expects on tests.
I had him for 30-1 this year and he was honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's really knows his stuff and teaches well. He always has the notes on schoolzone and is always willing to help you if you don't understand!
Seeing a whole lot of whiny high school kids on here complaining about not being spoon-fed in a competitive biology class. Guess what, when you go to university you aren't going to be handed notes on a platter. My experience with Henkelman was just fine, he treats you like an adult, and if you took responsibility for yourself his classes were easy. Though I can totally understand if you didn't have the mental capacity to follow along in class.
Had him for a diplomax course. Funniest teacher I've ever had.
-misses alot of classes
-doesnt give good study notes
-gets feriuos when you dont understand or ask a question
-doesn't teach the stuff you need for the tests
-tells stupid stories and babbles about strange stuff
-doesnt mark fairly - if hes made at you he will mark you way much harder than others
hope his kids get teachers JUST LIKE HIM!!
i just wish he would actually teach us! i’m tired of him telling us to read our textbook and look stuff up on the internet! my sister is in university right now and even she says that the profs there do a better job of teaching! i think he is either to lazy or to busy making himself seem important to other teachers to actually do his job!
Huge beaut, very helpful, available to help whenever you need. He gives you the chance to improve your mark through easy assignments. Teaches in a way that is easy to understand, and he is truly passionate about what he teaches. Some people may say he is too hard on his students, I seemed not to notice. Very tolerant as well, all most too much. Would not tell the kids in the back of the class to shut up. Really appreciated him as a teacher and hope to have him again some time in the future.
His tests are way to hard, if your in AP your whole mark will suffer because he is trying to prepare you for the AP exam (which doesn't technically count for marks) and gives you less time to write th
He does make his tests very hard and talks A LOT in his classes, but if you actually listen and pay attention to what he talks about you'll begin to understand some of the questions on the tests. Used
very smart. But hard to keep up with. Nice Guy though and has a very unique sense of humor. Hard tests, but he will prepare you for the AP exam.
Very difficult teacher, for a number of reasons. I found him to be a highly unprofessional person who was very forgetful as well as inappropriate in what he shared with the class. He absolutely knows
I did not acually find the tests very difficult compared to what the rest of the reviewers are saying and if you listen to what he is saying all of the content is there and you don't need the textbook
Very good teacher, sometimes goes through it too fast. VERY HARD TESTS. Inappropriate with language and stories sometimes, but it makes class interesting.
If you are in his class, pay attention and you will succeed. That is all
One of the only teachers to actually prepare me for the pace of university. Is more than willing to give help if asked, but won't seek you out for it. Teaches like you're grown-ups, not kids, and expects you to focus and work. If you take good notes and read the textbook, you'll do fine.
Maybe he gives hard tests because he expects people to pay attention in class and to prepare for the diploma exam. I did well in his class for Bio 20 and 30. Pay attention in his class...
oh man bio 20AP was TOUGH and his tests are like impossible hes pretty good at explaining stuff and some of this extra little stories made class so much more fun. i actually really liked him
A good teacher? Does he care actually care about any of his students? His class was about his twisted agenda. He proved how great he was (and bad we were) by neglecting material and giving hard tests
well he is not the best nor the worst. his class is freakin tough man! i think if he wasnt so hard on people, people would like his class more and as a result, do better. way too focoused on ap junk.
very good teacher,i'd say top 3 teachers i've ever had, very helpful when going for extra-help if you've missed classes. The tests are hard, but if you pay attention in class, you'll do fine
Awesome teacher who put in a lot of extra help when students asked for it and always made classes interesting and enjoyable. Thanks for all the extra review for the AP test.
His class is really hard, especially the tests, but he is really good at explaining and he definitely make the class interesting.
really hard, but you learn A LOT. Good in the long run.
try to avoid his bio 20AP class. His lectures are okay okay but his test are insanely hard..your average will go down about 10 percent from your science 10 mark!
I found him very helpful. Willing to give up his time to help me if I didnt understand things. He prepared me very well for bio 30. And he's very fun. :)
He definitely knows what he is talking about and teaches it passionately. But his tests are very hard and his humor/sarcasm is something you need to get used to
He is does not explain assignments enough. He needs to go over tests more with more detail. He prints a lot of his sheets off the internet. he is funny though
if you're into 80 minute lectures this is your teacher. he's the shhhhh you in the hallways kind of guy.
