Assigns minimal work but expects perfect work and nothing less. I barley passed a class I should have gotten honers in!
As a teacher, this man has refused to provide my child with any aid in social studies this year. In fact, he believes that telling students that they are failing in front of the whole class is more effective then actually teaching them to do better. If I were a parent of a student in his class, I would recommend you switch your child out before suffering inevitable failure due to the wrath of Van Doorn.
Great teacher, explains everything very well
The best teach out there! Doesnt give late marks, easy marks.
Talks the entire class, doesn't teach a lot gives notes the entire class,
Frank's work as an educator proves that he takes pride in his work, is supportive, and a kind hearted person. The logistics of his classroom while taking Social studies 30-1 were helpful and well designed despite what the rest of the SS department thought. Morover to describe his background the education and experience he made him sufficiently qualified for the work he was doing and he will continue to be one of my favorite teachers.
Good person, not such a great teacher. Often talks the ENTIRE class with the students just sitting there. Hard to stay concentrated with that teaching style. Also gets sidetracked with current events and stories.
Van Doorn is a good guy, generally. Hard marker, but if you can learn to write well (and he WILL teach you), you can find success. I enjoy being in his classes, first 10AP then going into 20AP/EuroHistory 30AP, etc. He can be sort of frustrating, he does go off on a LOT of tangential stories (even for Social teacher) and sometimes you wish he'd just teach you the bloody course material. But, if you pay attention, he's good.
Have him this sem for social 20-1, great teacher... (: Im passing his class so thats a good thing for sure. uses lots of current event stuff...
what breakdown are you guys talking about? hes an alright teacher but this year he has seemed to change from last year when i had him
Great teacher, great person. Make sure you get in his class!
Although in his class i didnt learn too much about social studies itself, I think hes a really interesting awesome guy! I love his stories although not always relating to social they are intriguing no
He is too much for high school, kids cant handle him but that doesnt mean he cant teach. He is the best teacher to have for the self taugh students, not a teacher for your avergae joe.
He needs to learn how to teach high school students. He thinks he is doing a good job based on the few students who like his teaching
I had van doorn for 2 years. Grade 12 was a bit of a struggle cause I found the class somewhat dull. There were way too many movies, and most of the handouts I didnt even look at. Very minimal things to hand in for marks. His tests are directly from the Key. Reviewing for tests wasnt really his cup of tea. He is very leniant to help you if you need more time to study for a test or if you want to clarify a topic. he goes off on rants about the olympics and his dogs, and brings them in regularly.
He is constantly off topic, constantly using his life as examples that don't help when it comes to the exam, and he relies too much on his movies and booklets, instead of actually teaching. It's obvious he wants to be a university professor and has no real interest in teaching in high schools.
It's been 5 years since my social class with Mr. Van Doorn and I still remember words of advice he gave me. He is an awesome, awesome, awesome teacher!
Awesome Social teach. Movies may be boring but they teach you a lot more painlessly than notes do. Even his notes are on the internet. Havent see a Teach. do more for his/her students.
Van Doorn is awesome, sure he has his weaknesses but hes an awesome teacher, i mean how many people teach you how to write a wicked essay by talking about the 1936 olympics and steriod use in sports.
Mr. Van Doorn is a GREAT teacher. I understood alot of what he taught us because of the stories relating to common day issues so I had something to relate to,
I loved Van Doorn. I had him before his breakdown. I learned alot. We had great discussions and the class was great.
