Very honestly, he is passionate about literature and english in general. However, he is always complaining about how much he hates his job. I normally love school, but he makes me not want to attend my classes... he is rude and disrespectful towards his students. Always making snide remarks about them. I do not believe he is fit to be an IB teacher at all. Please, SD38 do something about this. He is making students feel uncomfortable and afraid to attend class.

I had Mr. Pentland back in 91 when he subbed in for Ms. Green.
Funny to read the comments on here now. HE HAS NOT CHANGED. Back then we didn't have laptops to get distracted with, but he had a supply of Kinder Surprises at his desk. We'd get weak-minded assignments like "Pick a song and write what you think it means". And while we contemplated on picking a song that he would like (therefore giving a good mark) he sat at his desk trying to assemble the Kinder toy.

Okay, I understand why some people might not like him, because he doesn't exactly.... teach..... but if you go after school and ask a question, it's obvious he knows his stuff!! Plus, I honestly think he's really funny. Definitely my favourite english teacher :)

Had him for english 10, didn't really learn much at all. Still, I got an 98% in that class for doing nothing so I can't really complain.

No offense he can't teach at all. I was actually shocked to see him watching youtube videos online! I Asked him what I did wrong on an essay and he said," Oh sorry I made a mistake!" Like seriously???

I agree with most of the reviews here,He really does bias his marks on his opnion on you or your class as a whole.Plus he makes stupid assignments to begin with into projects.

I had him for English 12 and he is the laziest and most biased teacher I've ever had. You can write great essays but in the end he'll give you a bad mark if he feels like it. He favourites students. AVOID!

His lectures were helpful, but few and far between. I would have learned more in his class if he hadn't left us to work on our own so often, or left the room entirely so often.

Mr. Pentalnd is really smart, if you want to learn from him, you will. If not, you'll remember his class as a free period, which is a shame. Mr Pentland was one of the teachers I remember most fondly and I learned a lot from him.

i graduated in 2007. Mr. Pentland was a very smart man, but a very poor teacher. He didn't teach his students any skills, and mostly goofed off by surfing the internet or cracking jokes. The smart students were better off for it, but I did feel sorry for the ESL students or the kids who weren't very capable in English. He did them a real disservice with his lack of instruction.

Lazy and uninspired. Perfect teacher for Grade 12, if you ask me :) No discrimination, friendly, and is quick to sort out troublemakers. Great teacher for smart students. Illiterate students...not so much. Luckily, he'll give help regardless.

He is quite an eccentric teacher if you ask me. He doesn't do much in class but play his guitar and gives us long-term projects so that we were at least doing something. Due to his easygoing nature he marks extremely lightly and unlike other teachers, he doesn't analyze essays thoroughly...as long as it sounds good he'll give it a good mark.
