Dr. Pike is one of the best educators I have and probably will ever come into contact with. He has his own way of doing things, and he is a lot of work at points, but it's worth it. I learned not only a lot of curricular material in his class but life skills as well. He cares about his students more than any teacher I have ever met and if you put as much effort as he does into your assignments I can guarantee you will finish his class with over 100%.
Great teacher. Very knowledgeable with lots of availability and helpful hints to make sure you understand the material.
Though he is a great teacher for biology, he is not a good teacher for physics.
I LOVE DR. PIKE!!! he is the best teacher i ever had. although, IB is hard, especially with him, it's a lot of fun, and i will miss it next year!
He is so funny and has a gift in explaining what is going on in his brain in a language that the kids can understand! he is very understanding and even gives reasonable extensions if he finds the reason for that understandable! on one of my lab write-ups i scored really bad and went to him and asked him how to improve...so he allowed me to do my corrections and drop it off at his house so that he could mark it over the Christmas break! he is just a great teacher!!
people who are complaining about pike are obviously lazy ... what's different about learning bio vocab from a teacher hammering it into your brain or learning to teach it yourself? more work.
Dr. Pike is definitely extremely knowledgeable as both a scientist and teacher. Although he marks fairly hard and his assignments require a lot of work, he knows how to push his students into the right direction. His interesting sense of humor and random stories make his class fun and engaging despite the hard work. I'll definitely remember the phrase "What would a scientist do?" for a very very long time. That, and succession.
‎"Do what a scientist would do", and trust me you will by the end of his class. His teaching is very much like doing research for your Ph.D. He has a peculiar sense of humour and will push you to perfection and make you accustomed to that perfection so that you never forget it. Being in IB Biology is probably masochism to a whole another level, but in the end it is worth every drop of blood sweat and tears.
Very funny and intelligent man. If you're in Physics IB be prepared to learn a lot on your own, spend lots of time on assignments, and fail those assignments.
Pike's classes (esp. Bio IB) really depends on YOUR effort. If you don't work hard, you won't do good. Doesn't teach in class, expects you to research on own. Ask a question=What would a scientist do?
Miller knows best. She's head of science department for a reason
Harsshhh... But one of my favourite teachers ever. He teaches you without teaching you. It's ridiculous. If you know how to use Dr. Pike as an asset, you can do SO much. If you don't, you need to learn and learn quickly or you will burn.
miller is lots better, his marking is too unclear, and his attempts to make you think for yourself only mislead you to think incorrectly until he bothers to correct you
Overall an excellent teacher, one of the best I've ever had. His method of teaching is difficult to get used to at the beginning of the semester, but he gives plenty of chances to make up poor marks and learn more. The only people I believe will do well in his class are those prepared to work hard and efficiently, but if you can do that then you will benefit greatly. He has taught me more about biology and just work ethic in general than any other teacher I've ever had. Consider yourself lucky if u get him
very hard marker... chill guy...gives a ton of work... nice person...
Very hard marker, awesome person but if you are in Bio IB be prepared to do loooots of work. He gives lots of labs after school time, marks labs ridiculously hard and he mostly teaches by making you research. The old Bio textbook was crap, so I hope the new one is more helpful. Overall though, he is really nice and if you ask for help he will definitely help you no matter what!
i love dr.pike! I've never worked harder in a class, and he really pushed me to meet my full potential. He truly cares about his student's wellbeing. Nicest man ever.
There is a lot of work in any of the courses with him. Expect to work hours on labs; be prepared to fail those labs. The good thing is that he lets you redo almost everything including quizzes. He is a nice guy and he seems genuinely care about his students wellbeing. With that said, the result of the bio 20 finals this year was not good. Dr. Pike’s classes had the lowest averages and the most people that failed.
Dr. Pike is such a great teacher. He marks extremely hard but this motivates you to work harder. Most of the work you do in his normal Bio 20 class is actually university leveled stuff and will be beneficial for you in the future. It is unclear what he expects out of his students at first but you will get used to it after a while, and plus he posts most of the marking sheets on D2L so they're really accessible. Gives you lots of bonus projects as well to improve your mark. :)
if you have him for any classes be prepared to spent 5-10 hours on a lab, and 20 hours on a project . i advise you to get a university biology textbook as this is a university class not bio 20. all i can say is good luck
one of the best teachers! He is very dedicated in teaching and helping students-wonderful as a teacher and easy-going as a person. He is very helpful, and cares about the best interests of the students. He teaches very different from other teachers, but when you get used to it--you will benefit a lot. Not that hard to get good marks in his class, but it takes a lot of time and you have to work hard!
If you are not smater and more hardworking than a Ph.d graduate in biology, IB with Dr. Pike is going to short of an earbleed.
If you ask a question he answers with, "What would a scientist do?". Overall he expects his IB's to be smarter than any Ph.d graduate startting from week 2 into Biology. Future Students, R.I.P.
Not that hard of a maker, IB-wise but unless you ask for help yourself, his entire course is not very organized to what you should know.
A teacher which will preferentially favour IB students. Teaches at a university level, which works for some students. Problem is, this is high school.
I am in his normal bio class which is a shock after the crappy teacher I had last year. We had a student teacher for most of this year which probably what is keeping my mark up. He is really hard and gives waaaay too much homework. Sometimes he puts you on the spot, and looks frustrated if you ask a question but he is pretty nice. And he is HILARIOUS! He says he has a "bad" sense of humour but really its pretty awesome. So overall, hard, funny, and has an enjoyable class. He is also kind of my hero.
Dr. Pike is amazing, the man really loves what he does. How many people with PhD's in evolutionary biology are teaching in high schools? The man loves his work and his students. He has helped me with stuff that does not even pertain to his subject, and has gone out of the way to do so. I HIGHLY recommend scheduling private tutorials with him before unit exams. He has a gift for explaining things, he is even better in person. The only thing that I have noticed is a sense of superiority, but he doesn't mean i
not a good physics teacher, i dont know about bio, though. i had him for physics 15 IB. I didnt realize how easy the material was until I entered grade 11, Dr. Pike just didnt know how to teach it. hes a nice and funny guy, he just cant teach physics. one time our homework was to learn how to do centipetal motion and then we had a test a few days later. VERY unclear and a VERY hard marker.
pike would be a better teacher if he actually taught in class. i think the only reason people like him because of re-do's and late assignments. but he is an amazing person, will answer any of your questions. he knows his stuff.
Lots of homework. But if you do/re-do it well, you'll really understand bio.
HES ARROGANT ABOUT HIS SMARTNESS. HES CARING. if he hates you, believe me you will tell. he has this special "nice" way of being mean. I was picked on so much in his class in fronto f the whole freaking class, for no reason except self-gratification.
Good teacher. He makes his students learn mostly by themselves. Advice to future students of his... Do everything the assignment says in ful detail, redo 'bad' assignments, spend your breaks in his class studying, and buy him a fish.
Yes. Maybe one of the most famous teachers in SWC - Dr. Pike. I had him for grade 10 AND Biology 20 ( I mean , can you believe this? i wasn't even in IB!!! ) I got low 80s in his classes and believe me. A low 80s in already VERY good in Pike's class. You knw, REDO and REDO and REDO your hw is what Dr. Pike's class is about. Don't worry. You 'll get lots of bonus chances in his class though. good luck people....
Really great teacher and hilarious guy (if you're geeky enough to get it)... Lower marks than usual definatly, and so much homework that I spend my life trying to sorta complete them... But I've learned more in one month of his class than in one year of bio with another teacher.
he is a really good teacher, but people dont really get high marks in his class, his funny and all his stories about biology is fun too, made me like bio but doubted my own ability to do good in it. everything about bio seems like a lot of work to me now. he is there to help when ever you need it.
Bio IB teacher. SO very cool. yes, lots ^infinity hw, but well explained. not at all easy cause he has a PhD, but he knows a lot, is helpful, nice, very funny even with his bad jokes (what do you call 2 monks meditating together? biooooooooooooooooooooooooome... haha) yeah, great teacher --> lots of references, marks you hard maybe, but redos and bonuses save our butts. haha. go Dr. Pike
Insane amount of homework, but if you're planning on going into university it gives a taste of things to come. Overall he's a pretty nice teacher.
My fav. teacher in High School. He gives a lot of work, but he doesn't set a deadline =) except for ONE at the end of the year. Do all his assignments and bonuses, and you'll do fine.
excellent teacher. it was great having him as a bio 20 teacher, and hope to get him for bio 30 next yr. alot of homework but it prepares you well for uni. for all those kids who are planning to take bio20, i advise you to try to get dr.pike as a teacher.
LOTS of work, but I really like his class, very helpful.
Kinda funny, but sometimes shows a bit of an arrogant attitude...makes him not very open to new ideas....
worst teacher I have EVER had I ask for help and he talks to me as if I have the bio degree and know everything already
Tons of work (and then some) but he REALLY knows what he's talking about. His teaching makes info easy to understand and his class is TONS of fun.
Dr.Pike is SO COOL!! My FAV TEACHER IN THE WORL :D He even gives studenst his phone number so we can call him for help. His interest in bugs are COOL!!
He is a cool teacher. Hard, but cool. Very helpful and clear. Loads of hw though
makes you work for your marks but knows what he's doing. he works really hard and lets you do redos on your assignments.
Extremely clear and helpful! Cleared up in one class what I struggled to understand during the length of science 10
His class is sometimes difficult (workload) but it pushes you to learn more... he's a great teacher!
Very challenging teacher, classes are hard but you will learn a lot
