I had Mr. Spencer this past semester for grade 9 math, and I'm going to say this now, you're going to need to work really hard. Math has always been easy for me, but after Spencer, I realized how much effort was needed to get a decent mark in his class. His lessons follow the textbook a lot, and only gives clarification and assistance if you take time and initiative to approach him. His tests are extremely fair and if you pay attention in class, he often tells you what is on the tests and exams.
He is doing his job. He really does his job. He knows what is talking about.
Below says - "Most people fail his class, more than 5 people have a below 50%". Maybe it is you who don't study - "most people" would be more than half of the class and then you say 5 are failing with below 50%. So your class is 9 or less people? I have gone to Spencer for help at lunch. He is VERY helpful. As it says below - put effort into the class.
he doesn't do half of his job, the only thing he does is keeping an eye on the students and give a test. he explains the lesson briefly with limited information. so most people fail his class, more than 5 people in my class have a below 50%, our class average is a 68%. this is one of the worst math teacher in Gordon Graydon..
Hes tests are very hard, they are normally 6-14 pages long and he puts in really hard questions. Sometimes you will not be able to finish his tests because they are so long and you don't have enough time to finish them.
There are so many ridiculous comments from outrageously lazy people here. I had Roy Spencer at Gordon Graydon graduating in 2004. He was one of the best teachers I have ever had. I have even stayed in touch with him many years after. You get what you put into it like anything. If you want zero effort, then go flip burgers the rest of your life. If you want to be prepared for university and actually learn from someone that is smart and understands the real world, then Roy Spencer is the best.
Worst teacher ever. I used to like math but after taking the course with him i think otherwise. I was confident in the beginning of the course but i left the course confused and hopeless. I hope i never have him again. If i do i will switch out. I dont recommend him.
This man does not deserve to teach students. He creates unnecessary stress and seems to enjoy making things difficult. Some people only take math because they have to and he tries to make math "fun" but that means making the tests extremely difficult and letting over half the class fail. If a class's average is 54% then clearly they are not good at teaching. Yes he may know his stuff but what is doesn't know is how to explain and teach. Try to switch out if you can and try to avoid having him.
Helpful teacher despite what some say. Just dislike how he picks on some students.
Reason that he doesn't teach grade 12 courses - They want the best teacher teaching grade 11.
Class Average is 54 this semester and i'm getting 37%. He never gives a set test date and DON'T EVER COME LATE unless you want to get sent to guidance
Good teacher, but is a bit too much of an enthusiast of math news, and is probably borderline psychopathic...
He does not have a good teaching method. There is a reason why he is not allowed to teach grade 12. He picks on students, insults them, and puts them on the spot. He will give one example on the board, two if you are lucky but he does not elaborate unless you ask him. If you go up to him to ask a questions he will tell you to go away, he is busy, to do what it says, or read the textbook. If math is not your strongest subject then try switching to another class because it may be a bit hard for yo
He is an amazing teacher! Many people blame him for low marks and i used to do that aswell. but i've had him for the second straight year and when i matured and started doing my work, my marks started going up. He has helped me with every question i've asked him and he also does thing called math news everyday where he tells us interesting stuff happening in the world which most of my class enjoys
If you are mature and do your hmework, you can pass with a good mark. Maturity. He is hard. He is fair. But do your work. Giving excuses won't help your mark.
Never in my life have I had such an unpleasant learning experience. The class is 90 minutes of watching this buffoon scribble away at the chalkboard and then sit and tell you irrelevant facts that no one cares about while expecting you to understand the content from his silent board work. I usually learn more from a 7 minute video than I do in around 3 hours of his class. Not a bad man, but highly unqualified as a teacher.
Had him in Grade 11 Functions, came out of the course being more confused about functions compared to the end of grade 10 math. If anyone asks him a question about using the graphing calculator, he dismisses you with a "read the manual". Lacks Patience
He is really helpful. If you ask him any type of question, he will answer it.
hes lex luthor. Amazing genius level intellect. great teacher tho for real.
He may seem intimidating at first, but he's a great guy. He helps you if you ask him questions, and he's also really funny. When it comes to his teaching though, I'm not much of a fan. He has tons of knowledge and knows what he's doing but fails to project it towards the class. His tests were hard, especially his thinking questions, so make sure you study hard and do your textbook homework (which he assigns a lot of, so manage your time well) Try and you will succeed. Don't loaft :)
He gives hard tests. But he usually takes questions from what he has put on the boards. He always takes up questions if you ask. Grade 11 is the hardest high school course, but you will be prepared for Grade 12 and University. My first set of exams at University was a brezse.
He is THE BEST! I got a 98 in his functions class
An awesome teacher who is also quite funny. Additionally, he is really helpful if you ask him for help. Mr.spencer prepares students for higher levels of Math well.
He's actually not as bad as people say. He's really funny and eve though it's a crap ton of work to get good marks in his class he's so awesome like you don't even notice. It's true it's a bit self-teaching but mostly that's cuz he seems tooo intimidating to ask. But he's nice so don't worry about getting him.
omg he's the best teacher ever! just read the examples in the textbook and UR SET! slacked at the end and got a 98 in his class. manz way too ez. dunno why kids stress out...
his tests are hard(er) but fair and he isnt tooooo strict on formatting get him for calc!!!
Has a tendency to just do the work without explaining it very well and then expect you to understand it and do the 2 pages of homework on it.
He's a great teacher, if you approach the class with an open mind, and just listen to him, its fine. You don't have to do the homework, just understand whats going on. I had a 85% in grade 11 math, an
Great, funny teacher, never boring. However, it is true, his tests are difficult, especially for University level math courses. He will really help you if having trouble, if you just ask him.
...4 words...DON'T . EVER . BE . LATE . Unless of course you enjoy singing the calculator song in front of the class.... (Gangster gangster calculator in math class now not later) <-- calculator song
Gives very few examples on problems, and when it comes to tests he screws you over. Hard to get a high mark in his class.
made me shovel his driveway.TWICE. poor abubaker, he cant get chew no more :(
Great teacher for math. Tons of homework and will occasionally L.L.L.LAZY you
if you are not a "math student" but you study hard, he will help you every step of the way. really nice!
best math teacher at graydon. EXTREMELY touch. doesnt care about class averages, will do whatever he wants. but he is an awesome teacher. so if you are good at math, take him, youll be glad you did.
i agree..he is the best math teacher at graydon..very helpful and VERY clear
best math teacher at graydon by far. very FAIR not easy, not hard.
he's a fair teacher. yes, his tests are difficult, but he'll give you the marks if you deserve it. but yea, you'll probably do better with another teacher, but you won't learn as much
Never reviews test questions in the class after the test. Is this IBT standard or Gordon Graydon standard or just this teacher's standard? Won't recommend anybody to take him as a teacher in coming years(or He should improve himself to IBT standards).Who is considering his Math Class average between 60-70 is IBT standard. Which university will take us with Math average < 70%? Wake up-all of us are the future of Canada. If teachers with teaching skills like this then educated immigrants will takeover Canada.
Smart for himself not for students. 40% questions asked in the test are never taught in class. Shame on him - teacher like him are bad name for Graydon.
He's a smart guy and really knows his math, but his tests are ridiculously hard and the lessons he gives are more confusing than the actual work.
The BEST MATH TEACHER EVER... too bad i dunt get him next year. he was the best aka second semester first period, grade 9 and grade 10... kinda weird. Do the homework and you're fine. Keep his head shiny and you're even better!
best math teacher in the school. wish i was trying harder and doing better in his class. really fair marker, and his jokes are not as bad as people say.
Spencer is an amazing teacher! Way better than mr.rajah lol sorry rajah. Anyways, he really goes in depth of the concept and focuses on our most troubling points and helps us really grasp it. He's a great man and teacher and i hope to have him again next year! Great Job Mr.Spencer!
he is a good teacher, however, his tests are hard !!! ...if you like math and are good at it and want to learn from a good teacher take his class... if you just want good grades avoid this man !!!
Spencer's cool :p. He knows how to explain things other than some teachers... Cough*Rajah...]|... I'm doing 14% better this year already as a result. And btw, does that last person just so happen to have math with em last per. 1st sem? lol
Its been about about 2.5 months since he was my teacher. Seemed bad in the beggining, turned out to be good. Very helpful and pretty good teacher overall. Watch out for his puns and corny jokes. I always have a laugh with them
I liked him, but most people didnt cuz they dont like math. So most people shud RUNAWAY
k let me tell you about Spencer... He is a funny guy who will make lots of jokes, brighten up the mood. But, if you wanna pass Calculus or atleast get a decent mark in it, DO NOT take him! I repeat, do NOT take him. He's the worst teacher ever - doesn't explain anything. If you ask him a question, he'll say "meditate on it".. like WTH?! Don't take him.
really funny! loves math, and will help you with your work as long as he knows that you at least tried at first. got to earn your mark, but thats good of course.
Hard, but fair. Good university preperation. Don't think it's a walk in the park, because you will be sadly mistaken. You've got to earn your mark.
good guy and he use a lot of text questions in his test
He's really funny. He's cool, but is a really hard marker. Just get on his good side by talking o him about stuff other than calculus.
I barely passed his class in grade 11 but it was still kinda fun. His corny math jokes make it worthwile and he works you hard, which is good, as he prepares you for university.
only been 2 weeks and already cant stand him...by far the worst teacher i've met
Awesome teacher, you just need to put the effort forward in class. Prepares you well for university. Finite should boost your mark
Mr. Spencer is fair teacher. His tests/quizes/etc are not hard... if you do the homework you should be able to get a high mark in his classes.
Decent teacher. I am in university now, and based on my knowledges of what he is teaching I am having no problems in my calculas class.
Seems to think teaching is over after the lesson ends. Refuses to see students who actually need help. His jokes are so bad I wanted to cry before I saw my mark
bleh... NOT the greatest teacher. copying from the textbook isn't the greatest way to learn. if i get him for calc, i'm switching
My favourite period of the day, Spencer is the funniest person ever. Endless corny math jokes!
hes the best math teacher, he makes math fun!!! "house of math"
smart guy, needs to explain more and kinda nerdy but in a funny cool way
Heh heh heh. Him and his math jokes. Also his Cat. LoL. good times :)
The Want Monster & math parties! Enough said. Way cool!
