Film class with him was excellent! I will say that there were clearly a lot of people in class who were expecting it to be just an easy A and didn't participate at all or slept through the movies, so by class 3 or 4 it was basically just a private class for me and maybe 4 other students who were into it. Them of course, the kids who didn't show up or take part freaked out over their poor grades. Take him if you actually like film and want to discuss it!
Not kidding the first day of class he literally told us we were going no where and to stop having aspirations. He's so unclear and we had 1 mark all semester, at the end when WE had to evaluate OURSELVES. He's so unclear and goes off topic for at least 45 minutes per subject.
He is the possibly the meanest most discouraging individual I have ever met. Extremely negative and loves to pick on his students. I would not recommend him to any fellow student. A very knowledgeable person but is not made for teaching.
This guy is a complete idiot. He just discourages you throughout the entire class. Sure, maybe society isn't perfect but you don't need to lecture us into believing that we're all doomed. This guy is a total jerk. Ignore the positive reviews about him, they're just written by the delusional students who were favored by him.
TL;DR he's a bitter old fart, avoid.
The first class I ever had, I knew I wanted out. Althought I did learn a lot about the process of producing a video, he as a teacher never was the source of my new knowledge. I don't believe in a teacher who give criticism by bashing your work, there are so many ways to show you care about your students other than bringing them down. It's not fair to say he just wants you to do your best because he has is OWN view of what's good. And if you don't please this exact view, you'll never succeed.
I had Phil for Media Production. A lot of people criticize Phil for the way he teaches, yeah it's different but when i was done with his class I had learned what it was like to produce films better that i ever had before. He makes you work hard and doesn't baby you, he gives you a ton of freedom and if you are organized he will like you. If not you will be told straight up. WARNING HE IS VERY BLUNT WHEN DISCUSSING PEOPLES WORK! but I came to realize that we need that.
Horrible...just plain horrible....ruined my interest in school in general just because he has no clue how to teach. does not assign work properly and expects professional quality material. AVOID AT ALL COST!
Phil Vitone gave me lessons on how to properly project my voice for singing Frank Sinatra. If that isn't the mark of a good film teacher, then I don't know what is.
I don't know why students are so delusional to believe the fact that Phil is a good teacher. HE ISN'T. Words cannot express how much I loathe that man.
Phil goes both way's for people! (HAHAHAHA i know very funny) But all joking aside, If you want to get better in what you do, this guy will put you down so much but it is really worth it in the end. I
I do think he has rough edges, but for me he's a good teachers. He lectures too much and he definetely has favorites, though favoritism is a part of life, so might as well learn from now. When caught
Jaded. Self-centered. Condescending. Harsh criticism. Discouraging. Has favourites. Always has something bad to say. Talks too much and likes to hear himself talk. Doesn't "help" everyone. Boring. Bad
I wish there was more than these four categories, as they don't quite encompass what a great teacher is (just because someone gets a 5 for easiness or popularity doesn't mean they're any good). Phil Vitone was a smart, funny teacher who made me really think rather than regurgitate or memorize. I enjoyed every single class of his, though I have to admit some of the other students just plain sucked a there were a lot of people who seemed to think they could just watch a few videos and play criti
He is helpful when you make the effort of course. He does have his favorites. He tries to get us to see a complete different view on the movies we watch and it works, overall I learnt a lot!
Good Film & Social issues class. Gives many options 4 projects. Good intro to production. Makes you think critically. Shows interesting movies. I would reccommend Phil-although comes off intimidating.
He is not here to be your friend. If you want a teacher hold your hand his not the one for you. But he will help you if you ask for help. You must not take his critisism personaly.
i dont think he does what he teaches, kind of smug. rather boring, but ok for beginners.
Talks a lot, rants a lot. He's convinced that us students have certain ideas and he must save us from our own ignorance. Doesn't really listen to what you have to say. He just talks at you.
Phil is amazing and his class is amazing, there is nothing more to be said. I don't think I'll ever have another teacher who is as nice he was. Anyway who gets him should consider themselves lucky.
He is a great teacher, take him and you will learn a lot about good film making. Amazing artistic sensibility, if you really love film try to get him as a production teacher.
It's really too bad, because at first I saw a lot of potential in Phil and his Media & Youth class.. but the fact is that he's an arrogant guy who pretends to be on your side. Forget strict guidelines - he wants things to be done as if he did it himself. He'll rip you apart if things aren't perfect. I don't even know if Spielberg would pass his class.
he is one of the best teachers i have ever had. as long as u show him that u are trying he will help u and give you high marks. if u like to express your ideas take his class!!!
i thought he was great for media production. he's REALLY honest, which you might take as bad at first. but it's just because he's trying to motivate you. as long as you show him you're working hard he'll devote lots of time to help you out.
I love his Journalism/TV class! It's fun to just throw out ideas and kick them around. Especially what's in the newspaper. Debate with him, it's fun...true, he does lecture alot longer than necessary, but it's a price I'm willing to pay. I promise if you're a free-thinker, take his class, (NO REGRETS!)
the most well-constructed course i've ever taken. the man teaches some complex ideas that need to be understood. he is patronizing, but if you are critical of your own ideas (and his) and think hard, an incredibly interesting course. great material, too.
phil is one of the best teachers at dawson. if you get on his good side he'll be there for you. he makes u into a better filmmaker.
I would not take this teacher if it is possible. I did not enjoy this teacher as I found many of the Dawson students to agree with me. He has a certain attitude that can be very annoying.
Very condescending. Sometimes interesting, but mostly repetitive.
Laid back, but not much feedback from him. Makes you feel like you did something dumb.
Brilliant man- lots of great things to say. Uses Web Ct which is cool, and listens to what you have to say. Very understanding. Take him!
I loved Phil. He was always relaxed, always helpful. He was always looking out for me too. Good guy. Cool teacher.
If you like teachers that are truly passionate and involved- Vitone is not your guy!
Who doesnt hate the beatles?!?! Id do him!great ideas, great thinker, good movies, interesting, no writing assignments! no attendance! easy marker!
Expects lots. Accepts little. Picks favourites. If he doesn't like you, you are doomed.
One of the best I ever had. Valuable lessons for in and outside of the class.
Great teacher, laid back, likes David Lynch hates Forrest Gump, very cool guy.
THE BEST FILM TEACHER!!! will seriously expand your horizons in film!
He really pushes you to your limits, and believes that we can accomplish anythin
Can be difficult at times, but has interesting ideas.
