Hey commenter below, he needs to like you before you can even get a leadership opportunity. To get him to like you, you have to be as enthusiastic about music as he is. To him, music is more important than family, classes, and college exams. Gives bad mark if you miss class due to legit reasons. He'll brainwash you to buy products and go on super expensive trips and ditch your family events. He'll even blame your parents for moving . Everyone's rich enough to buy a house in North Burnaby, right?
I am a graduate who has had Mr Wenzek for 4 years in high school and has come appreciate all that he has done for my life through band. Sure he can be harsh sometimes but the main lesson is that he will put in the same amount of effort into his teaching as much as the effort you are putting into your practicing. To be successful in his class, you must not only practice but also take leadership roles and volunteer and also experience the opportunities you can get from music.
I have him this year at my school, and I think he teaches pretty good, but I play a woodwind, and sometimes, he spends ten minutes teaching the brass interment something and ignores the woodwinds.
Had him for a couple of courses (including MB) some yrs ago. Awesome dude--I got on his bad side a couple of times because I'm (also) quite opinionated but--he genuinely cared about the musical experience you got. (Got some gigs and advanced musical experiences thanks to him.) He convinced me that you don't have to be a professional musician to enjoy playing music for life. A good mentor & a great human being--honestly the source of my best BNSS memories+ the person who kept me straight & "real"
Well it doesn't matter anymore since he doesn't teach at Burnaby North anymore.
He is a rlly cool teacher, he has his own weird jokes and it is pretty funny lol....He takes everyone's opinion but sometimes he just refused to listen to others' ideas or thoughts...... It is pretty sad that he is leaving North this year, wish him all the best :-)
Alright teacher, but can be quite pushy and not so understanding. Puts music courses above all else and does not understand why you would want to take any other courses. He thinks music should be everyone's #1 priority :p He is opinionated but if you love music and agree with most of his opinions you'll probably love wenzek.
Best music teacher I've met in my life. Very wise, funny, and always engaging with the students. He's always on task and very nice. I hope he doesn't retire just yet, maybe in another decade?
Generally he's humorous, but just a bit pushy at times.
Knowledgeable in winds, not so much for strings. He can be stubborn and may not listen to opinions. Quit his class because I gained nothing out of it. 1 year wasted.
Honestly, he is a good teacher, but he's too stubborn with things. He says that he takes any opinions from students. But that's a lie. I gave him an opinion once, but it was turned down before he considered it. He's also way too pushy with things. I didn't want to go to Cuba one year because I didn't want to miss my brother's birthday and he said, "Your brother has many more birthdays, it's not like he can remember his fourth birthday. Who remembers their fourth birthday anyway?" I do....
He's a fun teacher, I really enjoyed the year. He has a lot of humour and sarcasm towards his students. Overall he's nice, but when you cross the line, he's not the type to talk nicely to you. It's not fun being scolded by Mr Wenzek
I enjoyed his class this year. He's answers every question clearly and actually wants to help his students succeed the only downfall is that he talks ALOT like he will talk for 50 min and play for 10 min sometimes so its kinda sad..
The worst teacher I known since my years as a student. Discriminates against students who just arrived from China. He ridicules their accents and disrespects others. Worst teacher I've seen since I started school. He should quite teaching altogether.
Very funny and great teacher. He knows what to do to help us learn and succeed. I really hope he will stay the band teacher.
Had orchestra with him for two years, he is indeed a very understandable teacher. Really flexible teacher, he can instruct from senior band to orchestra, though a clarinet major himself. Awesome and valuable experience having him as a teacher in his class, though exercises might be a slightly troublesome process in the class and not a whole lot of techniques can be taught. Otherwise, great teacher.
His teaching style is very good, but not effective with students like us. The way he teaches, he expects us to play well at practices and do a lot of homework so that we can continually improve. Students don't usually do the homework, so it may be better to just go through the pieces slowly at practices. He has an emphasis on technique, tone, and style, which I think is great. He is willing to help out at lunch and is organized. He's a great teacher but with a teaching style that isn't the best.
awesomest band teacher i've ever hand =]
fairly good teacher, has lots of really good advice. Can sometimes get off topic and it sometimes feels like he's taking advantage of students (trying to get them to volunteer for things and guilt tri
Good teacher. Keeps Everybody focused without being harsh and too strict. Helpful and fair
Pretty good teacher overall. Tries to do his best in everything, even though he has no idea about string players
really passionate teacher, overall experience with him is positive tho many many students dislike him. enjoyed his class, his trips are really meaningful should take full advantage of them at all cost
a good teacher for wind instruments but not that good in strings
Very good and helpful, and loves to talk which can sometimes get in the way of classtime
Really nice teacher and great musicians, but stay away when he's talking with ms.balchen during lunchtime- they tell weird jokes and make fun of you... Be warned- he's very 'German' at times...
Great teacher!! repetitive jokes...... good stories!!!! a little strict for marching band but you've gotta understand what with all the stress he has!!!
Sure is mean to ex band members especially those that did you great favours when they were still your students. Good persuasion skills. And good luck on your marching band. your going to need it
If your really get to know the Real wenzek, he's not as pleasent as he seems. He's super nice, cheesy and corny to the younger grades but once u get into sr. he becomes a dictator
He teaches extremely well but only to some instruments, I play the clarinet and he's like an expert so you get lots of support. Thinks too highly of himself, kind of wierd at times and tells lame stories. He expects too much but is very knowledgeable
Thinks very highly of himself and talks down to his students. I had him for marching band... i quit the following year. He was always reprimanding us like he was all and mighty.
Awesome teacher! Knows how to control the class but knows when to slack
Great teacher, always willing to help you out, he embarrasses you a little tho when he shows you that he can play your instrument better then you.(Happened with many instruments)
hes the biggest band geek EVER. I guess thats a good quality in a band teacher...
he's good but if your speak another language in his class he starts teaching you German and ests you afterwards
best teacher ever.. really want him back.. alpha doesn't deserve him .. he's magical!
greatest band teacher at north, good math teacher, funi honest and dedicated guy
He's easy if he likes you (well, music is subjective), but I have to say he is enthusiastic in music. Mr. Wenzek + Mr. Hilton = good band.
He's a good guy, he makes band fun, but he is a lil high on himself.
he's a really nice teacher...eventhough i quit last yr he's really patient with everyone got a nice temper and teaches us a lot of things...i really miss him
Hez a greate teacher.....good man and reall musical..too bad hez gone!!! i hope he comes back cuz itz different with him conducting, therez jus more espression!
Best band teacher you can get, he is a very reasonable man.. too bad he is no longer in BN, everybody misses him
He keeps the entire class on their toes with interesting jokes. He's cool and NOT an old-fashioned boring geek like some teachers. I hope he comes back.
I had him when he first came to North. Hard -working but self-centered, selfish man.
Forgot the ratings, I rate him 10(to the power of 10 million)!!! He's so funny and nice and he's a great teacher and all...too bad he's moving
hes the greatest!! ~too bad he's going away next year...if we get that mr. hardy dude, i swear i'm gonna skip every single class, but wenzek's pretty cool.:)
HE'S AWESOME PEOPLES!! He's also funny too...and teaches great. Keeps the class interested so well.
this guy is one of kewlest people I've known. He has a policy towards other languages, but I don't really speak another language. very patient.
teaches u life lessons a lot. good music teacher. and he cares if students are talking in english a lot:P
This guy can be pretty weird at times....but....hes a good teacher...he knows how to teach unlike some.....hes...okay...not that best....but hes okay
hez really funny and a good teacher if therez anythin that i don't like about him itz the musicianship marks, they're so annoying!
