She is underrated. That, I can tell you. I had her a good 14 years ago. She is very tough but to this day I strongly believe her challenging Grade 12 English class made me a better writer.
On the negative side, I do recall her being somewhat unfair and inconsistent at times.

Ms. Pekkonen was an influential teacher during my time at Lorne Park. She is knowledgeable, helpful, and pleasant (as long as you're polite and don't show off an entitled attitude). For English studies, get engaged in what you're reading, she'll appreciate it. I highly recommend taking Writer's Craft with her - it was one of the best classes I took in high school. For creative writers, she is very open about what projects to pursue for your portfolio, but you must be productive in-class.

She picks favourites, gives tests that are somehow ALL "worth 10%", gives you terrible marks if your opinion is not the same as hers, marks presentations really hard (she expects you to memorize presentations, even if they're 10, 15 minutes long) and expects university-level writing from high schoolers. Switch out of her class if you can. I had her in Gr 10 (where I suffered greatly) and when I saw her on my Gr 11 timetable, I switched out immediately. Save yourself

Unfortunately, my daughter had this teacher for English. She picked favourites. She belittled students in front of others. She gloated in giving bad marks and caused unnecessary stress

If you hate your job, find a new one. She would benefit from moving into another profession. Worst. Teacher. Ever.

Ms. Pekkonen does marking as it goes by the marking rubric. Grade 12 English is very hard with this teacher, hard to impress her on essays or assignments.
