Don't take a class with him. He cares more about himself than you. He claims to be understandings but when an actual problem comes along, he doesn't even listen, just fails you. He is rude and condescending. Worst English teacher I ever had.
Do not take him. He is completely neurotic and unclear. It takes him 30 minutes to answer a question and he doesn't even answer it. He leaves no space for personal thought and wants you to repeat his words and ideas in essays. He will mark you as absent is you use the bathroom or are late and will kick you out for checking your phone. His class will give you anxiety as he is all over the place and cannot string together thoughts in an orderly fashion.
Full of himself, probably has no personal life and due to that forces you to extra activities after classes. Wants to control every single step of yours, boarder line disrespectful to students.
Although his teaching is good and even interesting, his personality brings the classes value to zero. Avoid him at any cost!
Had him for I. C. E., I loved him, but I understand why a lot of people dislike him. He is extremely quirky, energetic and expressive. I found his enthusiasm for his class great and extremely fun. Graded our essays one-on-one which was great as we got to explain our essays. If you're open minded, I highly recommend taking Paul.
After taking an I.C.E class with him, I can say i`ve enjoyed it. ATTENTION though, he is not fit for everyone. He is very expressive, energetic and passoionate but on the other hand, the class depends on his mood. If he feels good, the class will be intresting. If not, he might give a quiz. During the semester we read poems, short stories, a shakespeare play and discussed the creations in dept. If you don't like reading or interpreting texts, i would not recommend but I personnaly liked the class.
He grades essays one-on-one, so you can plead your case and explain your work, which is a huge advantage. He's one of the few teachers I have who actually knows his students' names. He may seem a little crazy but his classes are actually interesting if you're open to them. He is energetic and very passionate. He swears sometimes, but it's nothing we haven't heard before. He does get insulted if you leave to get water or use the bathroom, as well as if you aren't participating. Would recommend.
English is a long class that can become very boring. With Paul, even though you most likely laugh at him instead of with him, the time passes by fast because of his enthusiasm and silliness. You read/pretend to read three books, each book will be the subject of an essay. He gives you the topic before hand (a very broad one) and you are able to plan at home and bring your notes to class. In class, he goes through lines he loves. To do well, just write what he says and develop his ideas.
This man is so insecure and paranoid, he's so focused on making sure he's not being mocked to actually teach. He laughs nervously and just stutters about whether kids going to the bathroom are too bored of his class.
Understand that Paul is an effective teacher under the circumstance that you communicate properly with him. His handwriting is atrocious which makes reading the board difficult; he likes using the board too. In my experience, most of his classes are readings from the books he chose for the semester. This renders this class time null and void since we're already assigned to read from home anyways.
He's also a rather paranoid. He accuses kinds who go to the bathroom of trying to mock him.
This is a teacher who is passionate STRONGLY towards poems and literature. He's a good teacher to take as there is very minimal homework. He is very understanding and will be glad to help, as long as you ask respectively.
A lot of people hated him, bit I personally loved him. Sure, he was a bit odd, and he often got really defensive when a student has a different opinion; but he was so nice! If you do the works required, it's easy to pass. The essays were easy as he always gave the questions in advance, and he was a fair grader. I always got the grade I deserved. He has very specific rules in class, but if you follow them, it's going to be easy for you.
One word; Paranoid. "I feel like you guys are trying to get away from me. Are you trying to get away from me? Can we please all sit a little bit closer. bring everybody into the circle." *bursts out laughing in a really seemingly fake matter* - Paul Hawkins
He is really all over the place when he is explaining things to his students. if you don't see things the way he does it's difficult to get your opinion out to the rest of the class. He spends half the class rambling on about nothing.
He's totally eccentric but is really passionate and wants his students to succeed. Just participate and try not to skip his class.
Incredibly odd and is very eccentric in his gestures and ideas. Writing is practically illegible. He's very open to student input and promotes class participation, but he clearly has his own firm opinions. He goes on horrendous tangents over irrelevant things for long periods of time and is susceptible to becoming aggressive on the rare occassion. Overall, he's certainly passionate and wants students to succeed, but what a strange teacher. If you take him, be patient. Best to write in his words.
Paul is an awesome teacher, definitely consider taking him. Easy marker, you cannot fail his class unless you don't do anything. He's fun and really gets into the topic and will most likely tune you out if he doesn't agree with what your saying.
He is a very good teacher who seems to love what he is doing. He will accept your opinions even if they are different from his and his essays are really easy because he will prepare you well. His only flaw is that he is very insecure and will stop his class and talk about how he feels if he thinks that you are not interested in his course.
Easiest marker at Dawson. All in class essays but he always give the questions in advance. I took his violence course. He lets people express their ideas even if they differ from his. Very understanding when it comes to deadlines. Basically cancelled 5-6 classes at the end of the semester to let students study for other classes. Best teacher I had at Dawson. Slackers, beware. He takes his class seriously but is awkwardly humoristic.
I'm surprised people said good things about him..
He swears a lot
Treats you like bad if you don't agree
Screams all the time
Super boring class
we barely learn anything because he's so busy nagging about his delusions and his insecurities
Please avoid him
He's not a good teacher and you won't learn anything.
He is the worst teacher I've ever had. He likes to go on 20 minute rants during class about how the students know nothing and he knows everything. His teaching style is all over the place. He's crazy. If he doesn't like you, you might as well drop the course because he'll fail you.
I think I'm allergic to him. He's so conceited. Very tough, expects too much and doesn't understand that his is not the only class we take. I'm considering dropping his class, which really sucks, but I'd rather take a summer course than put up with his weird style of teaching.
All over the place. Cannot keep up
Paul was a great teacher for the ICE reflections! It's a lot of reading but his classes are fun and honestly, if you do the work and consult him, you're sure to get the grade you deserve. He is very helpful and class discussions are always really interesting with him! TAKE!!
such a sweetheart of a man. awkward at times , a very fair marker and a genuinely nice guy! i would highly recommend him for reflections
A wise intellectual with extraordinarily creative insights about the fascinating Universe of literature. His poetic interpretations and exegesis glimmers in mystical splendour. Is very charismatic.
He's a good person. Just remember that he loves Frye, Shakespeare, Blake, and Lawrence Olivier and you'll be set.
Paul is a very personable and a great teacher all around. If you want, he will help you become a better English student and writer in general. He is passionate, and helpful. Even if you write very well, he'll expect more. It's quite inspiring.
Paul's class is great!!! His essays are REALLY hard, but if you put in the effort he'll always help you out...make sure to hear his rant on the dash!
paul is AMAZING!he is very out there & will make shakespeare extremely intersting. he is helpful with your essays if you take the time to approach him
If you like poetry, over the top babble about punctution and extremly flamboyant men, Paul is the man for you! Very entertaining!
he's cool and all, but just make sure you're on his good side, casue otherwise it's tough. really tough.
eccentric-interesting, but toward the end of term piles on way too much work, and isn't understanding with handing stuff in late.
I found Paul to be the most immature teacher and adult that I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. Although his work load is reasonable and he is not a hard marker, he takes pleasure in extensive speeches of his knowledge on what he thinks he knows,
the most understanding guy you'll ever meet hes amazing
I love Paul's class. Take one ASAP. His essays are great and his teaching style is both informative and flamboyant. Learned more about symbolism than I need to.
Paul rocks! Although his essays will leave you unsure and slightly afraid of words you'll enjoy his hil-arious antics and cool teaching style.
He's just great, he's laid back and always there when help is needed
He's chill, laid-back. He's a little eccentric, but a fun guy. Very cool course.
