if you don't like doing oral presentations or participating in class discussions, i don't recommend you take her class, although her assignments were pretty easy and the majority of the semester you're just listening to other people do their oral presentations
Irini is the best possible teacher I could've taken for my first philosophy class. She is incredibly intelligent and well-spoken, and isn't afraid to speak against the norm. She challenges you in ways you wouldn't expect and everyone in my class said they saw their perspectives changed throughout the course. She is not an easy grader and has high expectations for her students, because she wants you to try to excel. If you pay attention, participate and work hard, you will get a good grade.
She's one of those teachers where if you put in the work, you will absolutely be rewarded. Her course can be rough, but she is by far one of the most knowledgeable profs at Abbott. Definitely take her if you like to learn, but maybe skip if you want an easy pass.
Irini is the most deep, knowledgeable teacher I have had at Abbott. I had her for Intro to Philo and a level 2 Philo class and I don't regret it at all. She may seem very strict and harsh and unapproachable at first, but she does care for her students and is always willing to help. You must read the textbook and come prepared and not loaf around, or else you will fail. The class content will profoundly change the way you see the world. If you want to actually learn something, take her class!
I almost pissed myself in the first class. This was partly due to the fact that its a three hour class where she refuses to let you go to the bathroom, but also because she scared me half to death. After the first class she's way less scary but i honestly didn't enjoy the class. There is a lot of mandatory class discussions and I failed every quiz. If you don't want to put a lot of effort into THINKING don't take the class. She is very wise and a lot of people love her but she just wasn't for me.
Her class was... interesting.... I mean, i can see the value in it, but I didn't enjoy it. She just repeats the same lines over & over again, and she's a tough grader. She's super insightful though, and she is capable of smiling, it's just she hates ignorance, and she thinks all young people are. I love her as a person, but as a professor, maybe.
I took her for Philosophy and Communications. Honestly, this woman will change your life. She is so outspoken and phenomenally intelligent and insightful. If you have an interest in philosophy and are will to have an open mind, you will adore her class. I think if people don't like her, it's because she challenges them in a way they aren't comfortable or used to. She doesn't like ignorance. You will learn a lot from her. I've been trying to take her again!
You are either going to love this class or absolutely hate it. I hated it and most people did but there was about 5-7 people who really liked it. You need to go above and beyond to even get a decent mark in the class and also u need to participate alot which i personally hated. Also if you are taking her class as a complimentary, even though you might get above class average, your r score is really low because all the other complimentarys are really high. Drop this class unless u love philosophy
I took two of her classes. Philosophical questions was by far one of the greatest classes I've taken. She will listen to your opinion but she will challenge you by taken on a different opinion to get you to think different. She hardly ever expresses her OWN opinion so don't take it personally. Her essays won't have any instructions just answer the question using what you've learned from the book and use it to write something interesting. Hard but that's what it takes to actually learn something!
I took her humanities class "Science and Society" because it fit on my schedule but now I know I was meant to wind up in her class. Irini is the most remarkable and influential person I have ever known. She has such a deep and profound understanding of the world and you can't help but be inspired to take a step back and reflect and question everything you think to be true. The new amazing insights I would gain in every class was almost like a drug. Her class is learning as it truly should be.
I walked into "Philosophical Questions" feeling so intimidated that I considered dropping the course. I am so happy that I acquired enough courage to stay. Don't get me wrong, this class is not easy. It will challenge you like no other but it will help you realize your potential in life. Words cannot explain how much philosophy has changed me as a person. Thank you, Irini!
The class "philosophical questions" has changed the way I think outside of school. It was truly a life-altering experience, and has helped me discovered myself. I implore you, if this sounds intriguing to you, do join the class. It's not an easy workload, but the reward of an increased thirst for knowledge has probably made the single most amazing thing I'll take away from my time at Abbott. You won't regret it!
Her class is one in which you are actually expected to think, which is why I think many people dislike her class. Her first couple of classes weed out the weak, and after those she becomes one of the nicest, most intelligent teachers I have ever met. I have never learnt more about life than with her, and I can honestly say that I would easily take her class again and again if I could. I cannot express how enlightening her class is, and I would highly recommend it to everyone.
Just avoid it went in one class and dropped it right away
Don't listen to the other reviews, she's awful. She doesn't foster an open dialogue AT ALL. You share an idea (a debatable one) with the class and she will tell you whether its right or wrong in absolutes. This pretentious woman thinks she has all the answers and acts with severe condescension when speaking to her class. Because of this, the class is dominated only by the smarmiest kiss asses just regurgitating what she wants to hear. Infuriating experience, dropped the class.
Had her for ancient philosophy. She's very knowledgeable and has a very interesting mind. She's the kind of person you want to have lunch with and just have a discussion with her because she will open up your world and your mind to so many things. In class, there is a lot of reading, but if you do the reading and take good notes you will do fine on the tests and make sure you participate in class, because she will like you more and its an easy way to get marks
She gives a lot of homework. Okay teacher
She'll hate that I am writing this but Irini is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She hates cellphones but listening to her lectures almost makes you forget you own one. Phenomenal thinker, really funny and fun classes. Read the material she hands out and you'll pass her class no problem. She doesn't use omnivox, but she's always ready to help you during office hours or in class. You need to take her!
TAKE HER SHE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!! best teacher I've ever had! all the good reviews, listen to them.
I personally loved her for Intro to Philo. She is intelligent, & articulate, & will leave you questioning yourself & your life. She doesn't post grades or respond to emails (so if that's really important to you, avoid her), but the richness of education & the life-changing ideas that you will be introduced to in her class far outweighs the inconvenience of her technological aversions. Take her class, & at the very least consider what she says. I promise that you will talk out a different person.
A lot of people will love her and get ready to hear them regurgitate her lines for the next semester. Speak up in class and tie Marxism into your arguments - she'll love it. You will have to pay attention in class; expect to use the book more if you don't. Her class averages tend to be low, but she isn't terribly hard if you pay attention, make her like you & put some effort into her paper.
She's brilliant. Very knowledgeable. Very long winded. Don't take if you're close minded. Be prepared to do the readings and do the work. If you're not a strong writer, get help on your essays because she is not pleased when she sees minimal effort. Enlightening class.
I had her for ancient philosophy and her class is very interesting and she is very passionate. Inside class she is very strict, but outside of class she is really nice. Her tests are extremely hard, and it is very difficult to do well in her class. I went to see her during her office hours to try do better on her tests, but she was of no help.
Honestly the most miserable teacher at abbott. She will unleash her anger and misery onto you. Very intelligent, but way too opinionated. Her papers are impossible. Try to avoid
It's been 10 years since I took her Ancient Philosophy course at John Abbott and it's still by far the greatest educational experience of my life and the most rewarding. This teacher will change you - for the better. Even if I failed once and had to retake it, and even though I was always scared of her, I know she is the best teacher I've ever had. Open up, let yourself be challenged, think and work hard. You will acquire critical thinking and intellectual freedom.
Thank you Irini.
I had her for Philosophy of Culture, and she is very knowledgeable but is super strict about cell phones, laptops, and virtually any other electronic device. She is happy to help you, but you don't know your grade until you receive it after you've done your whole semester. She never posts grades on Omnivox, but she really has nothing to grade you on aside from participation and the final essay. Actually read the book, several times, mark passages, and you'll pass.
Anyone who has bad opinions about Irini probably didn't get her class. To do well, all you have to do is talk and know what you're talking about. I disagreed and questioned her quite often and I still got high 80's. Almost all the marks come from talking and depending on which class, there are a couple papers and a test or two. The only classes I've taken where I've actually had to think were her philosophy classes. You can take a lot from her classes. Take her.
Honestly, you won't know how awesome she is until you're out of her class. She'll get you thinking, and get your class isn't some of the most insightful, stimulating discussions ever. Don't take her sarcasm personally though, that's all I can say.
Irini is a fantastic teacher, she is so brilliant and knowledgeable--she is a true philosopher. I had her for Ancient Philosophy and although it was a very difficult class it was so worth while and so eye opening. She WILL change the way you think, and give you a class experience unlike any other, but if you're in college just to get good grades without effort or care, don't take her because you don't deserve to be in her class anyhow. Looking forward to my second class with her!
Not an easy class you have to work hard and study hard but this class will change your life. You cannot be vain and materialistic, you need to be open to the class. Talking is KEY! she puts on a tough act but she's really a sweet heart; don't be afraid of her
you learn a lot during class. However there's a lot of reading to do in order to understand what she's talking about and participation is very important to her. I do not recommend her, the class avera
Irini is absolutely amazing. You'll never think the same way ever again. She will actually change your life. Though she's scary in class, she's a sweetheart out of class. TAKE HER NOW.
hes a really hard marker. if u wanna pass her course, be sure to read the book a couple of times and always talk in each class. the tests are always about the book NOT ur opinion. interesting class.
She tells us to have our own opinion but when it comes to telling them she does like it unless it's actually her own opinion. She does not help you get ready for exams, she only says read the book.
Brilliant, hilarious, and tough. Not an easy class, but glad I took her. She is life-changing. A nice reality check. Would recommend to anyone starting CEGEP, a good slap in the face.
Irini's the wisest person I know! She reallllly makes you think. Her class is definitaly hard to pass though. DO NOT call her "miss'. And she's actually really funny. :)
I've taken Irini twice, and when she dislikes or likes you, it will effect your mark. She's such a cool teacher and so nice when you're out of class. TALK in class or you won't do as well
Not a slacker class but she's an interesting teacher; not necessarily the ground-breaking revolutionary everyone seems to think she is. Try to talk every class.
She is the Greatest teacher I've ever had. Irini changed my life, and she's likely the wisest person I've ever met. Never did I not want to go to her class. She was always the highlight of my week.
Irini? If I could, I would marry her! If you work hard and participate in her class, she's gonna love you! She's awesome, she opened my eyes and my mind. Take her, you won't regret it if you work hard
A professor who, although she may not change your life (which is a bit much to ask of any teacher over a 15-weel span), Irini will nevertheless make you think in abstract terms. Highly recommended.
She's brilliant! I love her. She's really funny. Most people take her too seriously. Enjoy her class. She is a hard marker, though, and you have to write what she wants. Life changing class.
the WORST! avoid at all cost! As soon as she doesn't like you, you will most likely fail. Hard marker too.
HER CLASSES ARE LIKE LISTENING TO YOUR BUDDY ON AN ACID TRIP!!!!!! = FUNNY BUT NOT EDUCATIONAL!
One of my favourite teachers ever. She is definitely a character, though, and so you either love her or hate her. It is a difficult class for some, but easy for others. I personally had a great time with her.
scary at first, but such an interesting class AND teacher. She's simply put awesome, the class is never boring and if you just LISTEN in class (which won't be hard) you'll do well. Once again, awesome teacher :)
Taking an Irini class is definitly an interesting experience, and one i feel every college student should have. Class is uncomfortable-- but in the end its worth it.. you won't regret it (knowlegde is pain)
one class that should be compulsory, only teacher who urges you to think critically and for yourself. easy marker if you write clearly and to the point. she may seem mean, but she is the sweetest woman if you speak to her one on one. purposely upsets you with heavy issues to teach you something worthwhile. take her if you have the chance, it really will change the way in which you see yourself and the world. trust me, ive taken twice, and trying for a third.
Among the best teachers I've ever had. She challenges you because she wants to get a response out of you, to disagree, to think for yourself. No, she isn't an easy teacher. But the rewards for your labor will make you all the better
class might get overwhelming at times, you might not get an amazing grade but very stimulating. her arguments make you see things differently
I had her for philosophical questions, shes not clear with how she wants her essays and expects us to write phil. essays without knowing how. She tagets people who say one thing she dsnt like. Really Dislike her.
I'm going to miss this authentic woman who taught me so much in only two years.
Env. Ethics: she enjoys hearing what others have to say, but she'll tell you you're wrong if you don't agree with her. it's a lot of reading each week. somehow, i feel smarter after taking her class. certainly a unique experience.
Irini was my teacher about 15 years ago (!). All I can say is that Irini is the only teacher I remember from college - and for good reasons. The only useful stuff (i.e. life lessons) I learned in college, I learned from her.
Irini pretty much changed my life. I learned so much from her Elements of Culture class. She talks about many things that you know but have never really discussed. It feels really good to discuss and think about issues that actually matter. The assignments and essays can be difficult but as long as you try and show her that you are using your brain you will get a decent mark. Going to that class was really enjoyable because she made me think.
she doesn't teach very objectively, if you don't support her take on a subject, don't challenge her she isn't looking for your opinion. Personnally i found her class stressfull, she finds ways of putting you on the spot and making you feel uncomfortable. If you like "thinking outside of the box" and have a negative outlook on society or look down upon those who "follow a trend" she's the teacher for you. But for those who don't her class will most likely leave you frustrated
She's an interesting teacher. Took her for phoilosophical questions and the course wasn't very demanding. A lot of presentations and discussions, a couple quizes and essays. Be prepared to think outside the box lol
I didn't really do anything and she gave me 75% lol But the content is interesting, a bit more difficult to grasp than your average class, but well worth it. Her philosophical questions class is mostly just watching people present topics from the book and discussions on anything and everything, plus a couple essays and quizzes.
[Ancient Philosophy] Irini is brilliant (and a half) She is the best teacher I have ever had, though the views in class vary. If you are not afraid to open your mind and think, please take her class. Philosophy is awesome and she makes every class so interesting. Class discussions about anything from Socrates to Global Warming. She will make you think. First year Liberals: Do not fear. Irini is the best teacher ever. Just speak a bit, and do your readings! Enjoy!!
Sure Irini is scary and intimidating but you will know no truth unless you take her class. I agree that everyone in the school should be made to take her course. You will be a more enlightened person for it
Most influential teacher ever. Everyone should have to take her. intimidating in class but outside rly nice women who is completely brilliant. Do ur READINGS OR ELSE!
good teacher, aviod her to get good CRC score. lot of work
Irini has got to be the best teacher I have ever had! She breaks down all the lies you have about yourself and the world and allows you to find something new. Wow
Irini is incredibly intelligent and i suggest you take her before you leave Abbott. You will never forget her class.
You may feel belittled and intimidated at first, but if you stick through the class with an open-mind she will honestly change the way you think.
You will be inspired to think outside the box and yes she wants you to have your own opinion, most people just don't realize that she's trying to inspire you to find it. Take her!
she really makes you think and has a passion for the subjet. Don't go to her classes if you want easy.
Although she can be intimidation, Irini is probably one of the best teachers in the College. Just don't be afraid and do the readings!!!
I first had Irini for ancient Philosophy.. and I had a hard time. I took her again for elements of culture and grew quite fond of her teaching habits. She really makes you think which is such a relief from just taking notes and listening to boring lectures. If yo have a chance to have Irini as a teacher you would be a very lucky student.
All graduating students must take this teacher! She will change your view on life, yor ideas and your whole mind frame. Shes hard but she knows who is a hard worker.
I loved this class. Do all the readings and speak up in class - it's one of the most rewarding courses you can take.
hard class. have to put a lot of work but it is worth it, she will actually make you think. need to participate a lot in calss. but she is an amazing teacher.
Good luck trying too find out what it is she actually wants on tests, cause she sure won't tell you, but you deffinetly start thinking in class
VERY SMART TEACHER, but VERY TOUGH! extremely interesting and eyeopening class but its a lot of work that u have to do, very opiniated, must participate to pass
A well read woman, perhaps to her detriment. Thought she is obviously well versed in philosophy, she seems to feel the need to spend inordinate amounts of clas
Amazes 1st semester students cuz she's 'eye-opening'. eh...not so much. Good philosophy teacher though, that's what matters.
her class isn't easy but you leave it with new views about the world you live in. she makes you feel like a pawn in the game of life...cuz you are.
Very interesting class but don't bother speaking your opinion she's not interested. Work hard and agree with everything she says and speak up a lot.
At first this teacher can seem very intimidating. She is so smart! One important thing though, you must speak in her class. Do ALL the readings!!! So rewarding!
speak up in her class, do reading, don`t be fake cause she`ll call you on it. the most honest and refreshing teacher i have ever had.
interesting teacher, but if you want good grades forget about it!! critical thinking means having the same opinion as her
She's very intelligent--has a vast vocabulary. Not hard to do well if you're somewhat smart. Just use your brains. Her bark is worse than her bite. Worth it
Brilliant teacher.Your fault if you fail. Her reputation is intimidating, but she's nice.Take her if you can.Greatest learning experience of my life.
Very very intelligent; she will make you think. Not an easy marker, but very fair.
She was the greatest teacher, teaching method was hard but rewarding. really makes you think. i loved her class, and would take it again if it wern't for marks.
Amazing teacher, she makes you reevaluate your lifestyle and the way you think. She's my favorite teacher, but can at times be somewhat intimidating.
one of the best learning experiences of my life (but brutal)
Narrow minded, she thinks everyone is entitled to her opinion
If you do the readings, it's the greatest class. If not, you'll be scared to go.
Her course(s) requires your full attention but you get so much in return.
super tough, extremely intelligent, intimidating, but will make you think
Makes you think beyond the usual! Demanding but worth the effort...
