She would pick on you if you don't practice, good luck!:)
As with all musicians, she teaches through demonstration and through listening. If your listening skills aren't up to game, you will have difficulty understanding what she is saying.
Very generous and kind. She's very responsible and on task
She's a jazz band teacher, so if you have her for concert band, like me (intermediate this year), she's not as good as Wenzek knowledge-wise. Her teaching skills are top-notch though! She has fun talking with the class, and is actually open for suggestions, unlike Wenzek. She has high expectations, but if you don't meet them, she'll help you so you do. From my personal experience, I've learned more from my 7 weeks with her as my constant teacher than the 2 years playing my instrument beforehand.
She's too boring for a teacher, she always ignore the flutes and clarinets (maybe the percussion too). You have to know your music well to impress her. She gets frustrated easily when she repeats herself. But she's still a nice teacher
Very calm and nice, albeit a bit strict. She aims for perfection yet does not force it onto us.
Very nice teacher. You just got to listen to the instructions and do your part.
AP Music Theory was the chillest class ever. We literally spent all our classes talking or doing singing practice. We would write tests every 2-3 weeks. since we had a lot of content to cover. However, everyone in the class got 5's on the AP Exam. She only gets mad when you skip class.
One of the most unique and interesting teachers Burnaby North Secondary has ever had. Her classes are fun, interesting, and the amount taught at her classes are amazing. Hopefully she will remain at Burnaby North for many years to come.
Very knowledgeable, however she doesn't always explain things clearly. Overall, an average teacher..
She is very open and chill in Choir class. Although she can be sarcastic at times, she does not mean no harm.
She is a wonderful teacher. She always has interesting stories to share and she has a passion for music. Definitely gets through things efficiently.
probably not the best teacher for those who don't have a natural affinity for music, or those who want an easy A ;-) Really really nice, she is the music teacher to go to if you want to play around wi
the iron maiden really wonderful teacher enjoyed my time with her
what good teacher wouldn't yell at your students and criticize them? she's the best teacher ever ! :)
getting an A is so easy :D however she does always start her classes off by completely off topic stories
she's funny but all the scales and jazz patterns hurt your head
Her tests are difficult but she marks very easily, shes ok but sometimes forgets to teach, she a pretty good teacher but a bit too
Has an odd personality...talented in music, but is slightly boring :(
overall get used to her personality, you'll really like her and see that she cares about you. could work on explaining things better.
Ms. Balchen extremely smart in music, she complains about her students and the world...overall very honset teacher..easy marks
Ms.Balchen was the best teacher i have ever had. she taught me so much about music she encouraged me to pick up an instrument & ever since i have been playing the guitar, writing songs & singing.
ms.balchen is a very fair teacher, who has high standards for everyone, but never something that is unacheivable. she pushes the students to their very limits, somehting most are afraid of doing.
ms balchen's expectations are too high and she expects you to come to EVERY SINGLE CLASS (including last days) and if you dont, she yells at you, takes off 20%, and calls your parents.
Ms. Balchen is an awesome Jazz teacher! Definitely one of the best you can find in schools! Plus, she had a musician background. Easy to get marks and earn respect..... if you practise alot!!
She's a very hard teacher, at times difficult to get along with, and often lacks understanding. But overall amazing person, and an unbelievable musician to learn from (especially for free). P.S. EGO!
Only join her classes if you have piano or theory if you don't prepare to get low marks, get yelled at and sent out of the room. If you have piano and theory you'll have fun w/ her
she explains theory very well, though sometimes demanding. if u really care about music, she's a great teacher...... but if u dont...
she has a very laid back way of teaching, probably because she's kinda lazy, but she can be nice at times
she totaly favours ppl who have piano & theory she doesnt give anyone else a chance. cant even sing very well herself.she is never on time & makes u sit on the floor if u r late!!!
She is very demanding towards new students who have absolutely no experience in the area. Almost expecting students to bexome musicians in just one class.
shes very good if you have talent. likes people who can play piano and knows notes , but very nice person
she's not so bad if you can do well in band and if you don't even try to do at least something then you will suffer A LOT!!
She's not that bad, but easily gets offtopic. High expectations.
choir she's totally different > i'm in both so i know. she's awesome in choir but in band, she's mean mean mean. but easy!
If you are not gifted in band, you will suffer. She needs to calm down.
I used to luv band sooo much...but once she came to our school...I dropped it. Clear?
choir is awsome, band isnt so, she needs to put the same effort and consistancy as she does the choir, but the band is shameful neway...
i like her, her knowledge to music is incredible. It's obvious she loves what she does
ms balchen really knows music and i like that she can do what she teaches. i think she's smart
I guess she's ok...but she can't realli teach well...i think she'd b better off being just a choir teacher than being both choir n band teacher
She is a little impatient, but, i hope she will get better through the year...
Sits there and watch her talk for most part of the class and kind of easy
great teacher if you actually go to class and be respectful
