I've had many music teachers over the years, and none are as knowledgeable, wise, and effective as Mr. Hurst. If you're willing to withstand a little bit of yelling instead of breaking down into tears and cry, then you'll learn lots. (For example, he taught me how to sight read better in 1 year than 8 years of piano lessons have.) Truly great music teacher, and somehow he knows all the fingerings for all instruments.
He is a good band teacher and a great musician. I used to not like him because I wasn't as good as i am now and i always mess up the playing in class. However, once i get to the senior band, he starts to respect more and more of me and we are cool with each other. He is a fantastic musician that he seems to know every instrument and the way to play it. We had other sub teachers to teach us and comparing them to Mr. Hurst, Mr. Hurst is way better at leading you to play. he gives you cues and stuf
Got to go to san fransisco with the band we got wet in the rain but hurst was good to take us there
I was always on his good side and never got yelled at. He was always really nice to me, maybe because I picked an instrument that no one wanted. He can be really angry really fast, but I think it's mo
if ya practisse youll do ok otherwise why join band hurst will help of you ask
yah he has the spazy attacks but probably because some kids dont ever play right i think he really does know how to make us band sound good
Some people hate this guy. I can see why, but I can't blame him. As long as you practice, and stay sharp in class, you do well and he shuts up. He's just really turned off by students who don't care.
Pretty funny when he gets really angry. He's a good teacher though, we're really lucky that he teaches at Churchill. And he can be nice, as long as you do what he says and get all the notes right haha
okay most of the time gets a bit dramatic butyou couldn't ask for a better band teacher
got 49/50 on theory test just easy stuff no study required hurst wants to take band to NYCITY next year COOL!!
He's a spaz. And gives theory tests without telling you. Don't take band. If you want to, go to D.T or PG instead.
hurst took band to victoria stayed up all night had a slammin time
he know what hes doing, hes strict, but he does it to help you. Hes passionate in music, and thats his job. Great teacher
At first, you might think he's mean and all.. but then when you get to know his style and what he expects from you, then he's actually pretty nice!
I had Hurst way back in '87-91 as concert band and stage band instructor. He was thoroughly hated by many people back then; but those that got to know him realized how effective of an instructor heis
I would not say he's that bad. If you get your stuff sorted out properly, you should be fine. Quite a hard marker though.
wants to take us on a trip to edmonten should be cool !!
...... what a spaz..... tsk tsk.... an "okay" teacher. but I would totally transfer out of band and for fine arts. :S
I think that he is a good teacher. He is an excellent musician. You just need to get on his good side. He doesn't yell a lot anymore and he's a funny teacher.
One time I was getting tested for guitar with him in music 8, and I accidently dropped it. His head looked like it was going to explode. LOL! "THAT IS A 200 DOLLAR GUITAR!" Oops, sorry, mah bad. LOL
went to whistler with hurst he got mad at kids on the roof but music was great had great time
can be motivating even inspirational don't believe the yelling stuff he just cant hear anymoreand is probably going a bit deaf from all the noise
hurst maybe takes it a bit too serious but wants a quality product and knows how to get it
He does yell a lot but he also DOES mean well. He asks people to come after school for extra help and does also offer help during class in his own loud way. He may come across as mean or cruel but he knows what he's doing: trying to make everybody into an excellent musician. Without music my school life would be boring and I think his making fun of you is his way of getting you to not make the same mistake. Though he could do it in a milder tone, this way gets the point across hard a raw.
maybe his teaching style is not what is expected, but the job gets done get over the loud voice i have been in the band for 4 years hurst is really ok
hm.....he teaches really good but he seriously has some ANGER MANEGMENT!! he's ALWAYS yelling at me for doing little...and i mean LITTLE mistakes!! sheesh
i literally get yelled at my him everyday and i get very embarassed but i guess i really do need to work on my playing. he's pretty encouraging in a way. when he yells at you, you want to prove to him that you can do what he expects
quite possibly there just might be a difference between adjusting and constantly spinning the music stands. maybe he justs sees to much of it. get over it
he definetely has anger issues! he made me stay after school for adjusting the music stand!!!
A very positive mentor who will always try to push you to become better. This is my 5th year(I'm in grade 12) with Hurst, and I must say I have come a long way since I entered band in Grade 8. Always remember to take band with stride, and don't stress over if you get yelled out. It's a wonderful environment.
what is the most important course at churchill? possibly in the eye or ear of the beholder. academics?? will you remember your formulas in 20 years, or how to play your clarinet? who knows. maybe it is right for each teacher to believe thier course is the most important. if they value it, they will try to get everyone involved. just a thought of someone who has played in the band for few years
He needs to realize that Band is NOT the most important course in Churchill and that we have priorities other than band like actual academics...And the constant yelling is unbearable.
Shouting+yelling, but he's a nice man, a good musician,very knowledgeable about music
he is a very.......ok teacher. i mean he is kind of bad temper, but he really knows his stuff. and he is getting better, admit it people. i had him since gr. 9, his temper gets better and better. to people who got yelled by, you guys have to think what you did wrong, becuz from my experience, he yelled at people for certain reasons. maybe u played a wrong note over and over again, or maybe u don't have talent and you dont pratice. find out what you did wrong, don't just blame the teacher for your faults.
such nice and best teacher ever. whom give you encourage by yelling at you
i miss doing band. mr.hurst was a really good teacher but he has a short temper. but it is kind of fun to watch him explode in rage because it's never me that he's angry at =D
I skipped his class 10 times in a row. I hate him that much.
He is such a wonderful teacher. he helps you alot, although he can be very mean when you aren't good
Mr hurst is definately one of my better teachers, the only reason he is mean to some people is because ive noticed you dont respect him as much as any teacher deserves, and the other reason is.. well... youre terrible at playing instruments.. so a hint to ppl here, join band if u can actually PLAY AN INSTRUMENT
had us do concerts already but did well expects a lot but seems fair good teacher
ppl ur stupid, he's awesome, if ur good and dont be stupid in class u get good marks and awesome stuff
doesn't like kidz who don't practise but understanable
went to sunpeaks stayed up all night videos hurst took us he's ok
he doesn't even try to get to know our skills.. just becuz my frds and i are new doesn't mean we're the oones making all the mistakes.. infact it was one of his students that kept squeaking!!!
Hes a good teacher, but he so mean and he has mood swings like he's pregnant.
i like him. he's helpful. he would be very nice to people who play something like oboe or Franch horn...and he somehow don't like keyboard bass
i actually like him even tho he's pretty strict and yells at ppl hehe
I can't believe that so many people don't like him for some reason, he's actually a really cool teacher, I've had him for 2 years and he was always really nice to me =]
One of the worst teachers i've ever had. He's literally also the meanest person i know. i've had him for 3 years and in the first year i thought he was the devil but then in the second i started to like him like many of the messages written here by other people, but in the third year i literally was counting off the days until the end of the year. There's no doubt he's an excellent musician and perhaps a good teacher but when it comes to being a good person he is exactly the opposite.
Thanks to Mr.Hurst for making the band class fun, It's cool to play the SAX!!!
If you dont practice your instrument or try in class, expect to be yelled at and dont blame the teacher for it. If you dont have any musical talent whatsoever, dont take band. However, all 3 band courses are an easy A for those who are naturally talented and those who take time to take out their instruments at HOME
Had an awesome time on band trip to Whistler Band is cool and so is Mr. Hurst
In my first yearz, I thought that he was really mean and stuff. Then I realized that it was parcially my fault, because I didn't really try. But this year it was awsome!! I realized that he's a great teacher, and sometimes he even teaches me on the side when the student teacherz conducting. I think he's one of the best band teacherz I've ever had!!
he MEANS well.. i'm shure. if u do good. he's good. if u dont. he's bad. makes u wanna quit. if ur his favoourite student.. you get one easy joyride. if your not.... all you can do is stare and the clock
Seems to really care about the students and the quality of the music
As long as you practice your instrument, he won't be bad to you. He sometimes jokes around with the class.
He's an amazing teacher. I used to be pretty rotten to him.. writting mr. worst on my exams and stuff but now I regret it because he is honestly one of the best
He is alright if you practice and try to learn. He wont get really angry even if you make a mistake, because everyone does. he helps people after school too.
Worst Teacher I've Ever Seen!! So many ppl drop band becoz of HIM~!!!!
hmm... cant believe i got a B for intermediate band fer 3rd term... but i still got A fer final, yay!!!i thought it was easy until 3rd term. Band, fun wit frds
If you survive beginning band, then everything will be fine... really easy to get A if you play another instrument already
Mr. Hurst is the best band teacher I've never had. He play trumpet and drums at the same time. How could he do that anyways?
THANK YOU SO MUCH !!! YOU'RE A GREAT MUSCIAN TEACHER!!!!!!!!!
he's scary.but I used at his yelling.well...SWC only have one band teacher
dont like him? too bad, he's nice to senior band students haaaa, he rarely yells in my class
i think Mr.Hurst is a GREAT band teacher and i like him soooo much...well...at least he taught me lots about music...thank u sooooooo much Mr.Hurst
Great music teacher..has sporadic mood swings but usually just trying to get a point across...if you can't take it, maybe you shouldn't be a musician anyways.
he's alright,i got used to his yelling and OK now,hes extremely nice to senior ppl haha :). A good band teacher for beginnner band ppl, but not so good for snr
Mr. Hurst is really ok, to the people who has a lot of experience in piano, but the thing he usually says is like "Gum? Garbage Can."
if you're on his good side, this is a class u will look 4ward to coz it's fun,u can watch ppl get humourously dissed and it's a sure A. get on his bad side...=S
He's nice,i really like him, even though he yell alot, but he's nice and friendly, and he don't pick on tenor sax much
